The Mixed Updates on The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2 are Staggering!

Apple TV’s latest addition to the mystery genre, The Last Thing He Told Me has been generating quite a warm response. And by warm, I’d very much like to emphasize the fact that, despite the astonishing reviews, the series leaves a warm and fuzzy feeling in its wake. Admittingly, that aftertaste is more because of the genre itself than Laura Dave and Josh Singer’s seven-episode drama. Led by Jennifer Garner, the series is stocked with philosophical lessons and banks on the intense step-mother and step-daughter relationship trope.

The most astounding and sardonically ironic lesson is that every piece of wood has a defining factor. The show’s defining factor remains its predictability. But The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2 and its updates do seem unpredictable from what the creators have said so far.

The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2 Updates

The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2

Laura and her husband, Singer adapted the farmer’s eponymous novel into a seven-part show. As stellar as the idea might be, the execution didn’t warm many hearts. It has its peak moments and does hit rock bottom several times but never deviates from its central theme. That is why, a sequel isn’t completely ruled out yet despite Apple announcing The Last Thing He Told Me to be a limited series.

Of course, another contributing factor remains the momentous achievement of the show. It is Apple TV’s most-watched limited series, leaving behind several popular novel-to-show adaptations. As mixed as the review might be, the creators’ comments add another dimension to the term “mixed outlook”. Dave began her interview with Digital Spy by mentioning that the sequel is “possible”. But then, she went ahead and almost nullified the plausibility. “I feel like this is meant to be a limited series. We planned it as a limited series, and I feel like – I hope for people that really connected to the book, and for people that are coming to it fresh – it feels complete onto itself.”

Even Josh had a similar opinion regarding the sequel. “We sold it as a ’limited’, and we always imagined it as a ’limited’. What I love is, you know, that thing that Laura found when she picked the book up again, which is that you think it’s a love story about Hannah and Owen, and it’s really about Hannah and Bailey moving closer and closer together. And that’s what I think is the magic here. And so, in some ways, that story is complete. So I don’t know.” Since the creators have more or less concluded that the story is complete, The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2 doesn’t seem to be happening.

The Last Thing He Told Me Overview

The Last Thing He Told Me features a doting stepmother, Hannah (Garner), who is left to deal with her new husband, Owen’s (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) teenage daughter, Bailey (Angourie Rice). The plot picks up after Owen has mysteriously disappeared into thin because his tech startup has been blown out. He leaves behind a cryptic note for Hannah, instructing her to “protect her”. The said “her” is Bailey, a stereotypical teenager, who hasn’t yet come to terms with her father’s new wife.

Hannah harbours a mindblowing talent for transforming wood into delicate bowls and urns. She hopes to craft Bailey and carve the bitterness out of her. For that, she relies on Bailey’s best friend, Jules, and tries to do everything possible to win her heart. She becomes the doting mother, going above and beyond to sort out the intricacies of her relationship with Bailey. The latter, though, does everything she can to hold onto her hatred for her stepmother.

Hannah goes from worrying about her husband to fulfilling his wish in a heartbeat. But what truly keeps the series going is Hannah’s cheesy grilled sandwiches Bailey keeps ignoring yet can’t truly turn her back to. The creators try to unravel the intricate relationship between a mother and a daughter, though very superficially. It has every emotion that could have set the audience’s hearts aflame. However, it remains so stoic that the emotions just don’t reflect back.

The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2 is Still Plausible

Throughout the seven episodes, Owen remains in the background as Hannah and Bailey go through their issues. They dodge each other’s intentions, hoping to fulfil their own accords. In the end, of course, they solve the said issues, finally embracing each other. The curtains roll out then and the series takes a time leap of about five years. Owen makes a grand but brief appearance, only to add a layer of intrigue to the show–which until then has been notably absent. However, he disappears within a few moments to protect his family and keep them away from the people he is indulging with. The people in consideration here still remain vague.

The Last Thing He Told Me is currently trudging along the line between a good ’ol drama conjured just for fun to a good ’ol drama that’s just not fun. It is intense, a bit brooding even but nonetheless, it is a striking drama. The parental trope might be the only thread binding the series and yet, the sequel might not be happening in the near future. But there are a few filaments the creators could use to tie it with a reboot of sorts.

If The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2 is approved or a reboot happens, it would certainly deal with Owen’s disappearance or that is what I hope it would. Essentially, this limited drama was meant to explore the thriller genre. But somewhere down the lane, it ended up being another emotional drama. Owen’s mysterious appearance half a decade after the debut season’s sequences certainly needs to be highlighted enough. Now that Hannah and Bailey have become a tight-knit clan, the threat looming above their head seems an engrossing trope.

The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2 Cast

If The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2 is greenlit, it will certainly feature Jennifer Garner in the central role. The Home Movie: The Princess Bride’s star would reprise her role as Hannah Hall, a wooden craft enthusiast determined to plunge herself into her stepdaughter’s life. Though she conquered her mission in the debut season, even more eyes are set on her new mission–save Bailey if the sequel is approved. She has spent most of the series playing Mama Bear even if Bailey was immune to her charm. It would be a treasure watching Hannah jump into full-blown protective mode.

The step-daughter in reference, Bailey Michaels Hall (Angourie Rice) would be making a comeback, too. In a nutshell, Bailey is a typical teenager with an I-don’t-give-a-damn attitude and a mushy heart, of course, the combination makes her situation overbearing. She tries to resist Hannah’s cheesiness and cheekiness but eventually gives up. Her best friend and journalist, Jules (Aisha Tyler) doesn’t have a high chance of returning to the series.

The second iteration would mainly focus on Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). He is a mysterious person with philosophical thoughts and a questionable moral. He is more of a ghost in the debut season that takes off after his startup is liquefied, leaving behind a pile of cash for her family. Owen’s identifying factor is his relentless pursuit of survival and unyielding passion towards saving his family. His presence is more or less inevitable in The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2 if it is approved by Apple soon.
