When YRF’s Y-Films’ first rom-com, Permanent Roommates blew away the Internet, web series wasn’t the norm. The second film in the series of Indian wedding dilemmas, Bang Baaja Baaraat followed suit. In fact, it carved another height of success and paved the way for other series to follow. It glorified the in-house dramedies, challenging the prejudices imposed by the audience on such a series. Bang Baaja Baaraat pioneered the ‘indie-film’ genre to greater heights and now, this sugary drama trope has gone mainstream.

Back in 2015, when big-budget series like Indian Matchmaking didn’t exist, Bang Baaja Baaraat began trudging along the wedding drama genre. Directed by Anand Tiwari of Maja Ma, this rom-com premiered on Prime Video in November of 2015. At that time, YouTube was the standard platform for such series-based stories. Expectations from actual web series were obnoxiously low and even a bit ludicrous at times. However, Tiwari didn’t let “the market determine what they were doing”.
In a post-screening interview, Anand mentioned, “When we wrote Bang Baaja Baaraat a lot of people were not confident about audiences watching a show about marriage where the family played about 60 to 80% of the actual drama. It didn’t revolve around youth, college kids or IT employees. We did a dramedy where drama was more of a focus when everybody around was just doing comedy. So at no stage did we let the trends of the market determine what we are doing.” He further went on to add, “Bang Baaja Baaraat was very honest with its storytelling; I don’t think people predicted that kind of entertainment on the Internet.”
“When the trailer came out, a lot of people thought it was a film. At that time, the expectations from a web series and its production value were very less. BBB changed that completely and now we see series with good production value,” Tiwari concluded. Despite having such an optimistic vision of the series, the creators haven’t yet gone ahead with a sequel. Though speculations regarding the second iteration keep rising, the creators haven’t yet confirmed anything. It seems like Bang Baaja Baaraat Season 2 isn’t in the cards anymore.

Bang Baaja Baaraat Series Overview
I can go on gushing about the intricacies captured by Bang Baaja Baaraat because this sleek drama has frothiness peppered over it. It is led by Mirzapur’s Ali Fazal and Commando 3’s Angira Dhar as Pawan Sharma and Shahana Arora. The latter is an urban city girl while the former is an innocent–and sometimes, typical–villager. The duo clash against each other with a bang, leaving sparks flying in the air. These sparks most certainly become a flame and light up the duo’s families on fire.
The said families are a bunch of loony characters who thrive on sardonic comments. The difference between these two bunches resonates throughout the series. While Pawan and his crazy lot are adamant about their traditional beliefs, Shahana’s clan has long parted ways with those beliefs. To them, modernization isn’t a word; it is a style of living. When the two clash against each other, the already preposterous relationship becomes even more hilarious. The rest of the series is a grand extravaganza of contradicting opinions and ideologies. Indeed, the Bang in the title has earned its place fair and square.
