Citadel has become a huge name for Prime Video and the creators, Josh Appelbaum, Bryan Oh and David Weil. With the infamous producers, the Russo brothers behind the series, Citadel is a leading science fiction action thriller. It isn’t just a series but a franchise starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the leading roles. It revolves around a titular spy organization that is left in tattered pieces after a major conflict with its rival organization, Manticore. Amazon Prime Video’s chief, Jennifer Salke, came up with an idea to create a global spy thriller franchise in 2018. She approached the Russo brothers and put forward her idea to which the Russo brothers took immediate liking. They grew fond of the idea as Salke and the team collaborated together to brainstorm over the screenplay. A team of Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec were chosen to bring Salke’s imagination to life. However, due to the pandemic, the production was delayed.
In 2021, David Weil took over the series after a major issue between the Russo brothers and Nemec. And since we all know how detail-oriented Weil is, Citadel went through major changes with nearly half of the scenes being re-filmed. At last, Weil and Prime Video released the first instalment of this global franchise in 2023.
Now, Citadel Season 2 is renewed ahead of the debut season’s finale. It has been planned from the start that Citadel would be an extensively huge spy thriller franchise with around 300 million dollars in budget. Citadel is accoladed to be the second-most-expensive series with such a huge budget and stellar cast ensemble. An Italian and Indian spinoff is already in filming along with American Citadel Season 2. However, a release date is yet to be finalized. It is expected that Citadel Season 2 will premiere around mid-2024.

While the filming has begun, Citadel Season 2 is facing a lot of developmental changes. A piece of news regarding Citadel Season 2 has been spreading like wildfire among the fans. The sequel is being shot in California and will likely span a few more countries. Due to this location change, the budget of the film is stirred violently. The executive producers, the Russo brothers, and the Department of California Film and Entertainment have confirmed that due to the sequel being shot in California, they will have to pay a hefty tax.
Not only does this increase the budget but also the expectations from Citadel Season 2. It is a risky gamble but with the vision the Russo brother, Weil and Salke have in front of them, it would be interesting to witness whether they would win the gamble. So far, with only two episodes of Citadel Season 1, it is quite complicated to predict whether Season 2 would be able to pay it off or not.
What’s better is that Citadel’s spin-offs have witnessed the green light as well. The Indian spin-off, starring Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, will commence filming soon. The Italian spin-off, produced by Amazon Studios and Cattleya, would be next in line. As I mentioned above, the creators will have to pay a hefty amount of dollars in taxes if they want to continue shooting in California. The producers would have to pay 20 per cent of the tax credit if they continued shooting the later seasons of Citadel in California. Season 2 doesn’t fall under the same criteria but it is still overly pricey. Citadel creators would have to pay 80 million dollars to be able to shoot the series in California.
If the debut season had such an enormous budget, the sequel would certainly be no different. The plans and ambitions of the creators are high and so is the budget. However, the success of the show is yet to be measured.
Citadel Season 2 Plot: What Is Next For Nadia And Mason?
This sci-fi spy saga follows Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) and Mason Kane (Richard Madden) as they weave through survival struggles and betrayal issues. They were part of a powerful spy organization under the name Citadel. The titular organization had 8 representatives from each country and fought for a global cause. However, one of these spies betrays Citadel for its rival organization, Manticore. The plot synopsis hints at an explosive, enthralling thriller, doesn’t it?
Nadia and Mason share a compelling history, their relationship goes way back before the Citadel was betrayed. Even though Mason is now married and has a daughter, Nadia’s chapter doesn’t seem to be over yet. Citadel Season 2 could easily work on the relationship between Mason and Nadia. It could be centred around the highly anticipated Citadel-Manticore war. The latter is more likely to be adopted by screenwriters since this is the whole point of Citadel.

Citadel Season 2 Cast And Character Guide
While Citadel has a gigantic budget, it surprisingly doesn’t possess a huge cast list. It is led by Richard Madden as Mason Kane who is an ex-Citadel spy and has lost his memories after a mission goes wrong. But later, his memories are revived by a magical vial brought to him by a Citadel tech genius, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci). Now, Mason is on a mission to save the deteriorating reputation of Citadel and help find out who betrayed the titular organization.
The next main character of the series is Nadia Sinh who has lost her memories in the same accident as Mason. Brought to us by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Nadia is a bold, confident and bossy spy. Her memories are revived by the same magical portion and now both these Citadel spies have embarked on a deadly mission.
The antagonist of the series is Dahlia Archer who leads a group of immoral people called Manticore. This organization is Archer is cosplayed by Lesley Manville and is a highly intelligent and ruthless woman. Aside from Jonas, Kane and Archer, some new faces are expected to join Citadel Season 2.
Citadel Season 1 Review: An Explosive Tale Spanning The World And Leaving The Audience In A Whirlwind
The then-untitled spy thriller proposed by Salke was supposed to be a rollercoaster of emotions and a blend of sci-fi and adventure genres. Now that Citadel is out, fully polished and ready to conquer the genre, fans are left in a kerfuffle. Many critics have appraised the series for its clever storytelling and immaculate acting put forward by the cast members. I have to agree with them since Madden and Jonas are stellar in their roles and have uplifted the mediocre storyline of the show.
Citadel is a blend of many genres but it is not a striking series. It does have moments of intrigue and the banter between Madden and Jonas is compelling. Since only two of the six episodes have premiered so far, I wouldn’t be criticizing the series for its slow pace. The series has abundant potential to become a leading espionage saga only if the makers step beyond the cliche storyline. So far, Citadel stands at 7 on 10 for me.
