The director of the movie, J.A. Bayona got hold of the rights of the movie when he was shooting his film The Impossible. The book on which the film is based is also based on a true incident. The entire plot of the movie is based on the famous Andes Crash of 1972. The incident occurred on 13th October 1972.
On 13th October 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed into the Andes mountains. There were various mistakes that led to this crash. The pilot of the flight was held accountable for the disaster that led to the loss of 12 lives. The pilot was flying the plane in bad weather conditions. He mistook the location of descent and crashed the flight right into the Andes. The pilot could not read the readings on the meter correctly which led to the disaster.
After the crash, 12 people died right away. 9 passengers and 3 crew members died immediately after the crash of the flight. The remaining people survived the frigid weather of the Andes mountains but not for long. Out of the remaining passengers who survived the crash, only 16 people survived ultimately after the disaster. The survivors overcame several avalanches and had to revert to cannibalism. They survived on the dead bodies of the others. They had to travel for 72 days and 68km in total without any mountaineer gearing throughout the frigid weather of the Andes before they could reach the civilisation.
Society Of The Snow Storyline
The storyline of the movie covers the entire incident of the 1972 Andes Flight crash. There are several Uruguayan and Spanish actors who acted in the film to bring it to life. The film portrays the 45 passengers and the crew members including the pilot beautifully.
Among the 45 members of the flight passengers, it included a group of Old Christians Club Rugby Union Team. There was also a woman who was flying for her sister’s wedding. Everything was going alright until the pilot started to make mistakes. He did make a stop, but the plane was not allowed to stay in that location for long. Therefore, they had to fly under rigid weather conditions towards the Andes. The flight was headed from Montevideo, Uruguay, to Santiago, Chile. To reach Chile, they had to cross the Andes. However, the plane was not strong enough for the journey. There was an altitude limit that the pilot crossed. This led to the crash of the plane.
