In 2021, Homura Kawamoto and Kikaru Muno collaborated together to work on a poker-themed franchise that consisted of an anime, a manga and a novel series. Crunchyroll licensed the anime in 2022 and High Card season 1 was released on January 9. It ran over for nearly three months and the finale episode aired on March 27, 2023. But before the anime climaxed, the makers gifted the fans with a piece of good news!
High Card season 2 is confirmed at Anime Japan and production has now begun. Though the release date and other updates are yet to be revealed, it is confirmed that there will be another season of this poker-themed anime. High Card season 2 is probably more anticipated than the debut season it seems. It began with the royal family of the Kingdom of Fourland losing the deck of 52 cards. These cards hold some amazing powers that the owner of the card can use. When Finn needs to make quick bucks for his orphanage, he ends up in the King’s casino.
Here, he joins the High Card club established by the King. The main task of the organization is to retrieve the lost cards and assemble them. Since Finn and the club haven’t yet collected the cards, High Card Season 2 is expected to continue Finn’s journey. Dealing with the royalties of Kingdom Of Fourland and striving against the Who’s Who car company while dealing with his past won’t be easy for Kelvin. High Card Season 1 Review: A Poker-Themed Anime Brimming With Chaos
Kawamoto’s idea of establishing a multimedia franchise based on the poker game is quite commendable. It is a fresh breath of air compared to the cliche fantasy animes and generalized action-packed anime series. While the idea is quite fascinating, the execution is a bit off. The anime is centralized around fictional superpowers and has hinted at Finn’s intense past. However, High Card is yet to elaborate on the said past.
Season 1 has introduced us to the characters and has set a base for season 2. Maybe, the makers were too focused on manifesting High Card Season 2 that they ended up keeping the enthralling stuff for it. While the anime is quite vibrant, it is quite slow-paced and wastes a lot of time introducing characters rather than focusing on the journey. If High Card Season 2 rectifies the above-stated issues, it does have the potential to become a leading anime franchise. As of now, High Card Season 1 stand at an average of 6.5 on 10.
