The name of the anime hints at its genre pointedly. Black Summoner, directed and scripted by Yoshimasa Hiraike, is an isekai fantasy anime that revolves around reincarnation and magical worlds. Adapted from the light novel series of the same name by Doufu Mayoi, Black Summoner follows Kelvin, a young boy who is killed suddenly by the mistake of the Goddess of Reincarnation. Here begins the journey of Kelvin, as he trades his past memories in turn for a fresh embodiment. This journey is filled with all sorts of magical creatures including elves and goddesses, secrets and summoning abilities.
The first season of the anime left the audience with several cliffhangers which have paved the way for a sequel. Black Summoner Season 2 Release Date
Waking up in a fantasy world, Kelvin has forgotten everything from his past. It is later found that Kelvin died suddenly due to the fault of Melfina, the Goddess of Reincarnation. Both Kelvin and Melfina take us to a magical universe where Demon Lords, elves, archers and other creatures reside. Starting from a low rank, Kelvin starts to bypass other summoners and keeps climbing the ranks. Whether this rank is a boon or a bane is the major question here though.
Black Summoner ran for 12 long episodes from July 9, 2022, to September 24, 2022. Licensed by Crunchyroll, and produced by the infamous anime production agency, Satelight, this isekai anime received mixed responses from the viewers. Though not necessarily hated, Black Summoner surely didn’t garner enough appreciation. It received a warm response from some fans but the critics pluck out some faults in it and the ratings fell down immensely.
The series garnered a 7.2 on 10 which isn’t much of a disgrace for isekai animes. Many animes have received approval for a sequel even if their ratings were as low as 4.5 to 4. Black Summoner has left us with some intriguing cliffhangers that make the sequel of this fantasy anime a possibility. However, there is no confirmation from the makers yet. Black Summoner Season 2 could be scheduled for 2024 if Hiraike confirms the return of the anime soon.

Black Summoner Season 2: What Could Be The Plot?
Black Summoner season 2 has a high chance of renewal because of multiple available story arcs. Be it the aftermath of Kelvin’s huge battle with Clive or Kelvin’s S Rank coronation, this fantasy anime has a lot to explore. Black Summoner is adapted from Mayoi’s light novel series which is also a manga of 15 volumes. Season 1 has adapted the first few volumes and left the rest for the upcoming seasons.
As I discussed above, Black Summoner Season 2 could possibly pick up from Kelvin’s coronation as an S Rank summoner. Since Kelvin is a battle junkie and enjoys earning higher ranks immensely, season 2 could let us witness his journey. Also, if Season 2 is to make any progress with the critics, it would have to personalize Kelvin’s journey and make his character relatable enough. Elfil, the slave and admirer of Kelvin, should be given enough importance and so does Kelvin’s forgotten past. Black Summoner Season 2 has the potential to help transform the series into a popular franchise.

Black Summoner Season 2 Cast And Character Details
Pursuing one enemy after another and attracting several women towards him, Kelvin leads this fantasy anime. Voiced by Koki Uchiyama in Japanese and Van Barr in English, Kelvin is a reincarnated Summoner who is a battle junkie. Nothing excites Kelvin more than defeating the monsters and incrementing his rank. Throughout the anime, Kelvin revels in his disposition as the only S Rank Summoner and tries to use his summoning abilities as much as he can.
The next main character is Elfil who is Kelvin’s servant and a former slave. Voiced by Manaka Iwami in Japanese and Bev Magato in English, Elfil is a golden-haired archer. She is quite territorial regarding Kelvin, she turns bitter every time he is with somebody else.
Voiced by Reina Ueda and Tia Ballard, Melfina is the Goddess of Reincarnation. She is the most formidable character in the anime and has the appearance of an angel with white wings and golden hair. While Elfil is territorial regarding Kelvin, Melfina is a food addict. Also, she has the power to summon anyone and transform herself into anything and anyone.
While Elfil, Kelvin and Melfina will certainly join Black Summoner season 2, many more characters are expected to join the list. Clotho, Gerard, Ange and Sera will be returning for the sequel too. Other than these characters, some new characters would be introduced, too, if the anime is to revive itself.
Black Summoner Season 1 Summary And Ending Explained
In February 2022, Yoshima Hiraike announced that Mayoi’s manga and light novel series, Kuro no Shokanshi, will be adapted into an anime series. Black Summoner started premiering on July 9, 2022, by introducing us to Kelvin. A reincarnated summoner, Kelvin, died due to the mistake of a god. To rectify it, the Goddess of Reincarnation, Melfina, makes a deal with Kelvin. She offers Kelvin a new life as a powerful summoner and an option to choose his skillset. In return, Kelvin will have to forego his past memories.
After reincarnation, Kelvin wakes up in a mystical town entitled Parth as an S Rank summoner. Though he is at the highest rank, he is still at level 0. Here ensues Kelvin’s journey of summoning and surviving. He keeps fighting off enemies and does his best to increment his rank. Meanwhile, he comes across several characters such as Clotho, who is Kelvin’s summon and a slime monster. Kelvin trains Clotho and makes him his slave.
We are then introduced to Elfil, who is a Half-Elf and has a curse to burn anyone she touches. Kelvin breaks the spell and frees Elfil, taking him under his wing. Kelvin encounters several slaves on his quest as a battle junkie and saves them by turning them into his servants. At the end of Black Summoner, Kelvin has conquered the mast hypnotist, Clive, who tries to lure Elfil and make her his slave. Kelvin is now officially an S Rank summoner and can openly use his position. This isekai anime ends with showcasing Kelvin getting excited to fight against other S Rank summoners being the battle junkie he is.

Black Summoner Season 1 Review: A Cliche Fantasy Tale With No Iconic Characters
Many isekai animes are led by deadly summoners and are quite engrossing. While initially, Black Summoner appears to be promising with the plot being set in a magical universe, the anime doesn’t land well. Kelvin, who keeps attracting each woman around him, lacks basic sense and the depth someone who is detached from his memories should. I couldn’t fathom how Kelvin is able to go on for so long by just pursuing one enemy after another and not striving for something substantial. Being a fantasy isekai, Black Summoner doesn’t stress enough about anything more than Kelvin’s enemies, not even his friends and partners.
Throughout the series, Kelvin is summoning one demon after the other and secures one power after the other. He has captivated the Goddess of Reincarnation, Melfina, too, like every other female character in the anime. Why is he so popular is still a puzzle to me since Kelvin hardly gives importance to anybody but himself and his ranks. Elfil, though more relatable than the other characters, lacks the capability to captivate the viewers. There is Melfina, who seems to be the most powerful character in the anime initially but she, too, is under Kelvin’s spell. Why? The anime doesn’t answer the question.
The anime series isn’t a whole disappointment though. It does have some saving points, namely the animation and character sketching, the character development is another red flag here. Other than that though, the anime is fairly forgettable. If Hiraike decides to move forward with another season of Black Summoner, he would have a lot to work on.
