Star Trek Lower Decks Season 3 Episode 1 Recap

The third season opener of the show, “Grounded,” follows the first two seasons’ extensive service to the U.S.S. Cerritos by Ensigns Mariner, Boiler, Tendi, & Rutherford. They have frequently saved the ship, teamed up with senior officers, and come dangerously close to death. This is especially true given that this picks up right where the explosive season two finale left off, with the ship secured but Captain Freeman being detained and falsely accused of destroying the Pakled homeworld. And “Grounded” appears to be planning to keep our ensigns as big dang heroes of their story for the most part. Putting the band back together is a wild adventure. There are adoring allusions to First Contact and Deep Space Nine, success over impossible circumstances, and the magnificent, victorious comeback of civilian Star Trek attire that resembles sweaters constructed entirely out of theatre chain carpeting from the early 1990s. It also compares the tales Lower Decks has grown accustomed to tell, in which Ensigns reject orders to do something.

In contrast, yet getting away with it because absent the defiance of their rank as Lower Deckers of Starfleet, there would not have been any heroes to save the day. This is explained in a brief montage that lasts a few minutes. Freeman herself narrates it in her best, most patriotic voice, radiant in the victory of Starfleet, having faith in one of its own despite outward indications to the contrary. After that, though, Lower Decks becomes smarter and won’t let Mariner get away with it as she tries to dismiss her & her friends’ shenanigans as “all’s well that ends well” chicanery. Our heroes have been severely degraded: Mariner, Tendi, and Rutherford must clean up the mess they’ve caused.

Most importantly, Mariner no longer has her mother to blame for tutting and justifying her recurring misadventures as being related to them. It wonderfully revitalizes the program as it enters its third season while remaining hilarious to the core and staying true to what Lower Decks has always aspired to be: a show about the characters that mill around in the backdrop of an actual Star Trek story. Only a show like this could begin a season by bringing down a few of its heroes, and only a program like Lower Decks could have us genuinely enjoy seeing it happen.
