Five Came Back is an American documentary based on journalist Mark Harris’s 2014 novel Five Came Back: A Story of Hollywood and the Second World War. On March 31, 2017, this was broadcast as a stand-alone documentary in Los Angeles and New York, as well as a 3-part series on Netflix.
The program focuses on 5 directors: William Wyler, George Stevens, John Ford, Frank Capra, and John Huston whose war-related films are examined by new filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, Lawrence Kasdan, Guillermo del Toro, and Paul Greengrass respectively. The narrator, Meryl Streep, earned a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Narrator for her work on the film.

The film is based on Mark Harris’s 2014 novel of the same name. More than 100 hours of newsreel and historical video, as well as more than 40 documentaries and instructional films created by the five directors during the war, were reviewed by the filmmakers.
They also looked over 50 of the filmmakers’ studio films as well as more than 30 hours of raw footage from their combat pictures. Laurent Bouzereau, a filmmaker with vast expertise in recording films and directors, proposed questioning five current directors for the project.
Meryl Streep recorded the documentary’s narration on January 17, 2017, that day she was nominated for her 20th Academy Award (for Florence Foster Jenkins).

Five Came Back follows five American cinema directors —John Huston, George Stevens Frank Capra, John Ford, and William Wyler – as they labor on the front lines during WWII. It is presented by Meryl Streep and relies on over 100 hours of historical film. Five Came Back Season 1 Recap
After the war, the five filmmakers return to Hollywood but are irrevocably changed by what they witnessed. After filming the carnage on D-Day, Ford goes on a drinking binge. Stevens is utterly unprepared for the tragedies of Dachau and quickly understands that he is there to collect evidence of a crime against mankind, not propaganda.
Wyler, who’s lost his sight during the war, is concerned that his career will be cut short. In the movie Let There Be Light, Huston portrays soldiers struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder, only to have the film censored by the US government.
