Soulcatcher Ending Explained: Does Fang Survive Jan Zareba’s Attack?

Helmed by Daniel Markowicz and David Kowalewicz, Netflix’s recent Polish thriller, Soulcatcher is led by Bartkowiak’s Piotr Witkowski. He takes on the role of a mercenary Robert Kiel who operates under the alias, Fang. Kiel, with his sharp mind and strong combat skills, is a valuable asset. However, he has long dropped out of the military and now works as a freelance mercenary along with his brother, Piotr. When the duo is approached for a lucrative mission, they immediately grab the opportunity without realizing the conspiracies and the danger that lies ahead.

Piotr and Fang are tasked with retrieving the images shot by Eliza Mazur, who has been documenting General Yousuf Bashir Mammadov’s war crimes. The duo has been a part of several deadly missions, retrieving a set of pictures is no big deal to them or so they think. With the ambiguous ending of Soulcatcher, you must be wondering whether Fang survives Jan Zareba’s (Jacek Koman) attacks. If so, dive in!

Soulcatcher Plot Synopsis

Though Piotr is initially sceptical, he embarks on the mission alongside Fang nonetheless. The duo weave through firing bullets, explosive mines and armed officers towards Eliza and successfully retrieves the images. A distorted Eliza succumbs to Fang’s demands but still harbours a certain aura of indecisiveness around her that raises Fang’s suspicion. However, he doesn’t have time to dwell on it. Surrounded by enemies, in a foreign land, Fang has to save himself, his brother and his team simultaneously.

As more bullets ring out, Fang, Piotr, Harbir and other crew members manage to put down their enemies and delight in accomplishing their mission. But then, suddenly, Piotr gets aggressive and starts attacking his own brother. A baffled Fang acts purely on his survival instinct and fights off Piotr, ultimately losing him forever. He then rings Krzysztof Bielik, a trained pilot, to rescue him and his team, only to end up being arrested.

Fang is approached by a mysterious agent who informs him about his misconduct and the atrocity pulled off by a suspicious NMP. But before he could reveal much, Fang’s cufflinks are pulled off and the minister, Jan Zareba, fetches him off personally. Of course, he has his own self-centred motives.

Soulcatcher Ending Explained: What Is The Soulcatching Device?

Fang, Harbir, and Krzysztof listen to Zareba as he introduces the eponymous device, Soulcatcher to them. This device has been created by Professor Witold Mazur to treat cancer but now, it is being used as a war weapon to turn people aggressive and senseless. When the powerful rays poured by the device fall upon people, they lose hold of their sanity and start randomly attacking people. Now, Zareba wants Fang and his team to carry on an illegal mission and retrieve the device.

Driven by vengeance and fueled by a sense of responsibility, Fang agrees to lead the mission. He then approaches his allies, Bull and Storm to join his team and then embarks on his mission. Fang later comes across Eliza, who admits to being her father’s assistant and helping him create the device. However, according to her, Witold is being kept captive by Yousuf and she is on a mission to salvage her father. The duo then collaborate to retrieve Witold, the device and free the nation of such toxicity. However, it is easier said than done.

Does Fang Survive Jan Zareba’s Attack?

Fang, under the disguise of a mere soldier, enters Yousuf’s chamber along with Eliza and his team members. Here, Witold is tortured to make the device work and Eliza is used as an incentive. Before Yousuf could sell the device, Fang and his team declare the war open. They succeed in retrieving the device and Witold safely but as they deliver the same to Zareba, they are attacked by the same mysterious agent who holds an arrest warrant for the latter.

As it turns out, altering the Soulcatcher device has always been Zareba’s plan and he is using it to benefit himself. When Yousuf tried to sell the device, he used Fang to retrieve it. As all hell breaks loose, Fang and his team are attacked by Zareba’s army. Krzysztof is shot dead and Storm is heavily injured similar to Fang. The two of them are successfully rescued by Harbir, Bull and the agent.

Is Jan Zareba Arrested?

It takes Fang two months to get back to normal shape in which Storm reminisces about her girlfriend and life while simultaneously taking care of him. Meanwhile, Eliza is forced into hiding and Witold is once again abducted. As soon as he is physically fit, Fang once again embarks on a mission to rescue Witold and expose Jan Zareba. He manages to connect with Eliza and they succeed in establishing contact with Witold.

However, Fang is once again attacked by Zareba’s aggressive army and escapes death within an inch of his life. On the other hand, havoc ensues in Poland and Jan Zareba is forced to escape his safety cocoon. As Markowicz and Kowalewicz’s Soulcatcher nears the climax, Zareba’s anonymous car driver appears to have some ulterior motives. Fang, as healthy and kicking as always, knocks on Eliza’s door and the curtains close with the former’s prideful smirk.
