Disney’s Sleeping Beauty is undeniably one of the most-read fairytales and most-watched animated series, isn’t it? While several animated films have been centred around Aurora aka Sleeping Beauty, the revenge-filled fairy, Maleficient hasn’t had a chance to become a protagonist. Robert Stromberg decided to centre a film around the fairy godmother of Aurora, Maleficient in late 2010. It is the first live-action film adapted from Sleeping Beauty by Charles Perrault and the fourth highest-grossing movie of 2014.
The second instalment in the series, Maleficient: Mistress of Evil, directed by Joachim Ronning premiered in 2019. Ever since the anticipation for a third film has been running high. Maleficent 3 Release Date
The first film in the series, Maleficient, premiered in 2014 after almost 5 years of constant efforts from the director, Stromberg and his team. This Disney film was appraised warmly and garnered over 750 million dollars. The sequel, Maleficient: Mistress of Evil, was announced a few months later and premiered on October 18, 2019. Unlike its predecessor, it didn’t garner much popularity and wasn’t an immediate box-office success. However, the film slowly grew in the audience and Maleficient: Mistress of Evil managed to earn decent reviews.
If we observe the pattern, each film of the series requires at least 5 years to complete its production and hit theatres. Maleficient 3 was expected to drop by late 2024 but there has been no official announcement from Disney yet. The film is neither planned nor under production and it seems like the makers aren’t interested in developing another Maleficient film.

Maleficient Story Overview
Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) is a powerful fairy from the magical forests of Moors who fell in love with a bright-eyed human boy, Stefan as a child. As they grew up, they started to fall apart but Maleficient’s feelings were as intact as ever. Stefan, however, had other ambitions. He wanted to become a king and for that, he didn’t hesitate to turn against his first love. King Henry, in order to conquer Moors, offers anyone who would kill Maleficient his throne. Stefan jumps on the offer but is unable to kill her. He, however, slaughters Maleficient’s wings and marries Henry’s daughter.
When Maleficient discovers the news of Stefan’s infant daughter, Aurora, she puts a curse on her, declaring that Aurora would fall into an endless slumber after pricking her finger on her 16th birthday. Stefan tries to save his daughter by stuffing her in a cottage and assigns a few fairies to keep an eye on Aurora. But these pixies keep lazing around and Maleficient starts to look out for her. These two develop a close bond and Maleficient becomes the one to break the spell she cast on Aurora by kissing her forehead and demonstrating her abundant love for Aurora.
Maleficent 3 Possible Storyline: What Will Be The Plot Of This New Film?
Maleficient, as her name suggests, is rumoured to be an evil fairy but she possesses more humanity than the humans themselves. Unfortunately, she’s highly misunderstood. One of those people who happen to misunderstand her happens to be Aurora’s (Elle Fanning) boyfriend, Prince Phillip’s (Harris Dickinson) mother, Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer). She lays out a trap for Maleficient by casting a spell on her husband and blaming our fairy for it. As Maleficient tries to escape Ingrith’s accusations and Aurora’s suspicious face, she is shot.
Meanwhile, the community of the endangered fairies, Dark Fae, save Maleficient who happens to be the Dark Phoenix Fae with the ability to reincarnate. At the end of Maleficient: Mistress of Evil, Aurora and Philip finally get married and Maleficient promises to return to visit their future child.
If the makers decide to manifest Maleficient 3, it would probably be centred around the Dark Phoenix Fae’s struggles to incorporate the endangered fairies into Moors. So far, the creator does not seem to have such plans.
