Bright

This Netflix Original takes place in a world where humans live alongside mythical creatures in a fairly modern world. The movie stars Will Smith as protagonist police officer Daryl Ward, who is assigned to be the partner of LAPD’s first orc police officer, Nick Jakoby. Being the first and only orc on the force, he is not fully welcomed by everyone. Though hesitant to trust Jakoby at first, Daryl does develop a friendship with the tough orc. The two uncover a plot by a villainous group to release a sinister being into the world and team up to stop them.

The movie plot itself is not too intricate but it does differ in the fact that it shows mythical creatures living as normal beings alongside us.

I am Mother

This 2019 Australian Sci-fi thriller takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where a mass extinction event has left the land almost inhabitable. A robot named Mother, set in place in a bunker to repopulate the earth raises a human girl named Daughter. The robot establishes a relationship with the girl, while also teaching her moral lessons and caring for her. Mother planned on creating more humans from embryos once the Daughter is fully grown and there seems to be no issues. The daughter, thought to be the last surviving human, gets more curious about the outside world as the days pass eventually leading her to the bunker’s airlock. And there, she hears another woman’s voice calling for help from the other side.

Cast– Luke Hawker as Mother (performance), Rose Byrne as Mother (voice), Clara Rugaard as Daughter, and Hillary Swank as Woman.

Hubie Halloween

This 2020 American mystery comedy stars Adam Sandler as Hubie, a straightforward, yet a little playful citizen of Salem, Massachusetts. Hubie is ridiculed by friends and family but he isn’t deterred by it. Hubie is appointed ‘Halloween helper’ one year, mostly just to keep him busy so the others can be unbothered by him. Hubie on the other hand takes his job seriously to protect his town on one of his favorite nights of the year.

Hubie follows some small noise complaints and suspicions that eventually turn out to be actually missing person scenarios. This includes the kidnapping of his co-worker Mike, Mr. and Mrs. Hennessey, and Pete Landolfa, one of the townies who ridicules Hubie. Follow Hubie as he races to save the people of his town all the while making the audience laugh at his antics.

Velvet Buzzsaw

Set in Los Angeles, Velvet Buzzsaw follows the story of Morf Vandewalt, a critic of contemporary art whose opinion drastically affects the value of a piece. Josephina, who is Morf’s friend, comes across the work of an unknown painter and believes it to be valuable. She takes the pieces to Rhodora Haze, the owner of the gallery where she works, who then puts the paintings up for sale for a fortune. Unbeknownst to any of them is that there is a supernatural creature that dwells in the paintings that will kill anyone who wishes to make a profit from the pieces.

On Body And Soul

On Body and Soul is a 2017 Hungarian drama written and directed by Ildikó Enyedi. It follows the friendship and bond that comes to exist between co-workers Endre, the CFO, and Maria the newly appointed meat quality inspector at a slaughterhouse. During questioning of all employees by a psychologist as part of an investigation looking into some stolen materials, Endre and Maria realize they both had the same dream. They find out that this is a recurring thing and decide to reenact it in their waking hours, hoping to find some meaning to the shared dreams. The process causes some tensions between the two due to personality differences and newly developed romantic feelings toward each other.

The Perfection

This 2018 psychological thriller is one of the most disturbing movies on Netflix. Directed by Richard Shepard, The Perfection tells the story of Charlotte Willmore, a gifted cellist at the prestigious music school Bachoff. She leaves the school in order to care for her terminally ill mother. Years later, Charlotte reaches out to the head of the Academy, Anton, to assist in their search for new students, which takes them to Shanghai. She then befriends Lizzie, the star pupil who had replaced her when she initially left.

During their time in Shanghai, Charlotte and Lizzie have adventures of their own during which Lizzie begins to feel some discomfort. She is offered some pills by Charlotte and takes them. A while later Lizzie begins to hallucinate that her arm is infested with crawling critters and is coerced by Charlotte to cut it off. The events that follow slowly reveal some disturbing truths about the academy itself and what goes on behind closed curtains.

Awake

Directed by Mark Raso, this Sci-fi thriller was released on Netflix on June 9, 2021. Jill Adams is a former army medic who now works as a security guard at a local college. Due to tough times, she steals drugs from the college’s research lab for extra cash. On her way back home, she picks up her two children (Noah and Matilda) from her mother’s place.

On the way back, their car begins to lose power, collides with another vehicle and they end up in a lake. Jill and Noah seem fine and Matilda, who was drowning, is rescued by a police officer who informs them while at the hospital that everything that runs on electricity is either down or malfunctioning. This is followed by all the coma patients waking up. Jill soon discovers that no one is able to sleep and the effects of sleep deprivation soon set in. The only one who seems unaffected is an old woman who is being studied at a facility in order to find a cure.

Cast– Gina Rodriguez as Jill, Ariana Grenblatt as Matilda, and Lucius Hoyos as Noah.

iBoy

Based on the 2010 novel of the same name by Kevin Brooks, iBoy stars Bill Milner as Tom Harvey, an average 16-year old guy who takes a romantic interest in his classmate Lucy. His friend Danny gets him a new phone and also encourages him to pursue Lucy. On his way to Lucy’s place to help her study, he walks in on a crime being committed by some members of a local gang. Tom flees to call the authorities but is shot in the head and falls unconscious. He wakes up in the hospital to the doctor informing him that there are pieces of his phone lodged in his head. Tom soon discovers that he can hear phone transmissions and manipulate electronics. He uses his newfound abilities to take revenge on those who wronged him and Lucy.

Cast– Bill Milner as Tom, Maisie Williams as Lucy, and Jordan Bolger as Danny.

Tag

Tag is a 2018 comedy directed by Jeff Tomsic and is based on a real-life group of friends who play an intense game of tag. The plot follows Hogan Malloy, Bob Callahan, Randy Cilliano, Kevin Sable, and Jerry Pierce, a group of grown adults who have been playing tag since 1983.

Jerry Pierce is the only member of the group who remains untagged to this day and on hearing his announcement to retire from the game because of his upcoming wedding, the other friends get together to plan an all-out attempt to make sure Jerry is tagged before he permanently leaves the game. Though the friends are invited to the wedding on the sole condition that they put the game on hold, they continue to pursue Jerry who seems to be prepared with a few tricks up his sleeve.

The movie received mixed reviews upon its initial release yet the silliness of grown men playing serious tag is always watchable.
