This movie revolves around a musician called Nina Simone – she is one of the most legendary and influential black musicians to ever exist. But Nina (2016) is somewhat of a hotch potch if you consider the plotline. It shows us different aspects of Nina Simone’s life in details. The film takes us back to 1988 when Nina Simone was in extreme distress. She has become an alcoholic who finds it hard to balance between her passion and necessity. This is way past her shot in fame in the 60-70s.
Nina has a lot of troubles now – she increased them by harassing a lawyer with a firearm. Some people managed to force her into taking her in a psychological ward to sort her issues. Nina recovers but a new trouble sets in her life. Doctors are finding out that she is down with cancer and the disease is spreading fast. She needs treatment but for various reasons, Nina is rejection proper therapy. In fact, her abusive nature forces her assistant Clifton to leave her. On one of her performances, Nina Simone assualts a member in a nightclub. We could all see how Nina’s life was falling apart slowly and she could not help it any more. But towards the end of the movie, Nina Simone starts to recovwr after having surgery.

If Zoe Saldana has ever been in serious trouble for a film, this is it. Most of the audience has poorly recieved Nina after it came out. The worst nightmare for any director or producer is probably controversy. When Nina came out, soon after poeple saw Saldana as Simone, controversy started. Now if you have seen the biopic, tell me one thing honestly. Didn’t it feel a but weirdly performed?
Well, most critics found this a hot mess of a biopic. They were genuinely frustrated with how they applied tan on Zoe Saldana to make her look a shade darker than she is. This is a bad violation of Simone’s strong message about dusky skin-tone being beautiful. Plus, the film over emphasizes on a lot of scenarios that did not even make sense. Nina might feel good initially but all together, it’s a poorly portrayed biopic.
