The Story Of Sam Bahadur: India’s First Field Marshall

Shamsherji Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, or shortly, as the title of the biopic suggests, Sam Bahadur, is one of the most legendary personnel from the Indian Army. It’s not possible for people like us to imagine that we will give away forty years of our lives that easily. Sam Bahadur was one of the brightest field officers in the Indian Army. Even decades after him, he is still one of the brightest stars on the list whenever the name of Indian Army Field Marshalls comes up.

In the history of our military, Sam Bahadur was the first military officer who got upgraded to the Field Marshall’s rank. Apart from his contributions in the field of his post, his works remain unfathomable. Shamsherji was a boy from Amritsar. He was brought up by his parents – his father was a doctor. After his parents refused to let him go to London and study, Shamsherji just sat for the entrance of the Indian Military Academy to take revenge. But he passed the exam with flying colors, and on 4th February 1934, he graduated.

Sam Bahadur has played instrumental roles in many wars and battles. He was the second lieutenant of our army during the British rule in India. Under his efficient leadership, the Indian Army has dominated in their wars against Pakistan. Due to Shamsherji, in 1971, we won the Indo-Pak war. This was the main cause that gave rise to Bangladesh as a completely seperate country. He started his services in the then-British Indian Army sometime after World War II. Since he was a brave army man and a valiant soul, the people of our country started to call him Sam ‘Bahadur’ due to the wars he won.
