The King Eternal Monarch Season 2 Release Date: Why Has SBS Not Approved The Sequel Yet?

The popular 2020 fantasy K-drama, The King Eternal Monarch, remains one of the finest shows to date. Directed by a team of Baek Sang-Hoon, Jung Ji-Hyun and Yoo Je-Won, the series follows a curious yet sceptical king, Lee Gon (Lee Min-Ho). The King Eternal Monarch marks Gon’s first series after he returned from serving his military duties and was an immense success despite the controversies. The writer, Kim Eun-sook and Lee Gon have previously proven to be a great team after their hit series, The Heir. They worked their charm into this series as well, making it the best Korean fantasy drama.

Yet, despite it being ranked as the most-watched K-drama, The King Eternal Monarch Season 2 remains a mystery, Fans are now concerned regarding the future of the series, which honestly seems rather bleak with each passing day. If you’re one of those fans, jump in!

The King Eternal Monarch Season 2 Release Date

Hosted by Netflix and SBS TV (in Korea), The King Eternal Monarch managed to garner several accolades. It was the most anticipated series of 2020 due to its star-studded cast ensemble and heavy-budget production. And it delivered what it promised–at least to an extent. It held a tight spot on the most-watched list for weeks, becoming the most popular series. However, controversies soon weighed it down and the complicated narrative made it tough for The King Eternal Monarch to rise back.

It is assumed that the average performance of the series is to be blamed for the delay of the sequel. However, Netflix and SBS TV are yet to officially cancel The King Eternal Monarch Season 2. Since the storyline has potential and already a set fanbase, the chances of renewal aren’t diminished wholly. Given the pandemic and the complex production of a fantasy series, The King Eternal Monarch Season 2 could be expected to premiere in 2025.

The King Eternal Monarch Plot Synopsis

Lee Gon is a modern-day emperor who keeps yearning for a place to wholly belong. After his father was murdered by his half-uncle. Lee Lim (Lee Jung-Jin) and has almost choked to death by Lim, Gon has been traumatized. Though he rules Corea with a tight fist, his personal life is a mess. When Gon finds Lim crossing the barriers into an alternate world, he devises a plan.

He soon discovers that the two alternate realities, Corea and Korea, are each other’s mirror images. Here, everyone has their opposite doppelganger. Gon comes across a police officer, Jeong Tae-ul (Kim Go-Eun) and several people who join him on his journey.

While the plot seems simple, its execution has landed The King Eternal Monarch into trouble. Several critics have accused the series of promoting fixed-gender roles without letting the characters have a chance to grow. Moreover, numerous elements of the series draw a resemblance to Japan’s elements without having the official rights to do so. This inaccuracy landed the series in hot waters.

The King Eternal Monarch Season 2 Storyline

The series suffered a lot despite the makers admitting to using stock images due to restricted Covid situations. The sixteen-part fantasy drama has the potential to evolve itself and better entertain the viewers. I particularly found this mirror world an enticing concept. Had the makers focused on developing the storyline into something beyond meandering for no reason, the series would have had better reception.

However, all hope isn’t lost yet. If the makers decide to go for a sequel, Lee Gon and Jeong Tae-ul’s relationship could serve as a stepping stone. Throughout his life, Gon has been tormented due to his half-uncle. His scepticism should certainly be lessened. A fixed trope cannot be predicted for The King Eternal Monarch Season 2, sadly.
