The Trial Ending Explained: Why Does Sana Change Her Testimony? Is Rajeev Framed Or Guilty?

The infamous Indian actress, Kajol makes her Hotstar debut with this new Disney Hotstar’s The Trial: Pyaar, Kaanon, Dhoka (Love, Law, Betrayal). As its name suggests, The Trial is a courtroom drama featuring a housewife-turned-lawyer, Noyonika Sengupta (Kajol). Based on Robert King and Michelle King’s The Good Wife, this Indian adaptation narrates the story of Noyonika in eight parts all under the one-hour mark. Directed by Rana Naidu’s director Suparn Verna, The Trial begins with a bang and a betrayal–and coincidently ends the same way.

When Noyonika’s husband, Rajeev (Jisshu Sengupta) becomes the centre focus of a scandal, the Sengupta family is tattered down to pieces. Rajeev, who is a high-end lawyer, is now featured in a controversial video and his infidelity is the talk of the town. Now left on her own with her two daughters, Ananya and Anaira, Noyonika has to weave through the unnecessary media attention, the snide glares and the soul-sucking trials. Amid this mess, Noyonika decides to revive her long-lost career and sustain her family.

The primary question remains though, is Rajeev framed or guilty?

Is Rajeev Framed Or Guilty?

As Noyonika starts to balance her work, family and Rajeev’s infidelity, the latter spends his days locked up in prison. While he has his politician friend, Ilyas, on his side, the world stands against him. Especially Noyonika…or is she? Well, that’s a complex one and definitely warrants a separate discussion.

As The Trial commences, Rajeev is imprisoned for bribery and money laundering. Initially, he claims that the video of him with another woman is edited and has no truth to it. As his trial continues and several media personalities and judges start to investigate, Rajeev’s situation becomes explosive. He doesn’t only have a trial to endure but an enemy to tackle, too. Rajeev’s rival Jadhav curates a master plan to destroy Rajeev by arranging false testimonies and shreds of evidence.

In the end, does it matter who tried to do what to Rajeev? It doesn’t, not in the greater sense anyway. With Ilyas’ back support and Noyonika’s help, Rajeev boasts a strong team but a weak case. Rajeev is guilty of cheating on his wife but is framed for bribery due to a grudge Jadhav bears against him. Now, they only have to prove the limitations of his crime and it is a well-known fact that proving a crime is a tough endeavour compared to committing it.

Jadhav Lays Down An Intricate Plan To Take Down Rajeev

A couple of years back, Jadheev was a mere lawyer who with his aspirations climbed the stairs and became a prime-time lawyer. He had high ambitions namely achieving bigger things, owning prestigious cars and luxurious commodities. Rajeev’s aspirations led him to several high-class celebrities and criminals. One such criminal is Jadhav, who is now on a mission to destroy Rajeev.

A few months back, Rajeev denied to approve Jadhav’s construction plan and ever since the two of them have been clashing against each other. In a fit of rage, Jadhav lays down a plan to sully Rajeev’s image. He aims to destroy him in every possible manner. For that, he resorts to blackmailing Noyonika and Rajeev’s former employee, Sana Shaikh (Kubbra Sait). Sana was in charge of Rajeev’s accounts. She is now working at Vishal (Alyy Khan) and Malini Khanna’s (Sheeba Chaddha) law firm. Coincidently, Vishal is Noyonika’s close friend and has now employed her in his firm.

The Trial Ending Explained: Why Does Sana Change Her Testimony?

The Trial Ending Explained

Sana hails from a low-income family and similar to almost everybody in the series, is desperate to earn money. Be it her colleague, Dhiraj Paswan (Gaurav Pandey) or the firm’s owners, Vishal, Malini and Khanna (Kiran Kumar); each of them is dealing with financial issues. The series hits the mark with Noyonika’s monetary issues, too.

Sana has turned cynical with her boss kicking her out of the job and everyone around her being selfish and self-centred. As she starts working closely with Noyonika, the chip around her heats starts withering away. But when Jadhav blackmails Sana and offers her a stable position, she succumbs to the pressure and agrees to testify against Rajeev.

As the final trial begins, Ilyas uses all of his contacts and Noyonika applies her law-related knowledge to save Rajeev. Why? Please ask the writers’ team, Hussain Dalal, Abbas Dalal and Siddharth Kumar. Well, anyway, the trial is the last hope for Rajeev. As Sana is brought up to testify against Rajeev in the final hearing, she flips over her words. She denies Rajeev’s involvement with any illegal transaction, leaving Jadhav reeling. Moreover, the woman seen in Rajeev’s explicit video is proven to be with him for money which Rajeev paid.

Here, Rajeev is declared free of the charges. But he has another surprise (and betrayal) in store for his wife, Noyonika.
