Survival Of The Thickest Ending Explained: Whom Does Mavis Choose? Do Khalil And India End Up Together?

Netflix’s coming-of-age comedy-drama, Survival Of The Thickest is now premiering finally! Centred around a plus-size American-African woman, Mavis Beaumont, the series is a compelling combination of not-too-preachy but loaded with enough life lessons. The series is created by Michelle Buteau, who also serves as the executive producer and lead protagonist, Mavis. With her upbeat personality and optimistic approach to life, Mavis is a struggling stylist. Beaumont has centred her life and career around her boyfriend, Jacque (Taylor Selé). But she isn’t reciprocated equally.

Though Jacque loves Mavis, he is unable to hold himself back from cheating on her behind her back. Unfortunately for him, Mavis catches him red-handed and if it is one thing Beaumont is, it is a self-respecting storm. But life isn’t done throwing wreck-balls at Mavis yet.

Here’s a rundown of this romantic comedy-drama, starting with Survival Of The Thickest ending explained!

Survival Of The Thickest Plot Synopsis

Fresh out of a relationship, Mavis teams up with her best friend, Khalil (Tone Bell) to move out of Jacque’s place. Her genius idea is to sign up for a roommate-finder website and go with the flow. Beaumont ends up with an olive-oil addict roommate, Jade (Liza Treyger). On the other hand, Mavis’ career isn’t flourishing as she hoped. But instead of mulling over, she decides to pick up an opportunity thrown her way. Her new project is to style the 90s supermodel, Natasha Karina (Garcelle Beauvais), who is also a plus-size Black woman.

The two of them bump heads as Natasha’s self-doubt issues clash with Mavis’ no-nonsense personality. As Mavis styles Natasha for an unknown event, she makes her realize the true value of self-acceptance. As it turns out, the said event happens to be Natasha’s ex-husband’s funeral in which she saunters in wearing an emerald-coloured dress as if it is a party. As if Mavis’ luck is out to play around with her for a while, she stumbles across several such models who are trying to fit in anyhow they could.

How Do Mavis And Luca Meet?

Apart from several people Mavis comes across, Luca manages to catch her eye swiftly. They stumble across each other by chance at a local bar and instantly hit it off. Luca is an Italian resident while Mavis has a budding career in New York. Though Beaumont understands that she isn’t ready for a committed relationship yet, her blossoming feelings towards Luca alter her beliefs. The duo tries to have a long-distance relationship and vows to work things out.

Soon, Mavis’ career becomes demanding and ruthless. She hardly has any time for herself or for her best friends, Khalil and Marley (Tasha Smith). The bags under her eyes become prominent to everybody including Luca, who decides to rectify the situation. Since he believes Mavis needs time off work, he books her ticket to Italy without discussing it with her first. Instead of considering it a humble or a romantic gesture, Mavis gets offensive. She chides Luca for going behind her back and considers his actions a personal threat.

Survival Of The Thickest Ending Explained

The issues between the two lengthen the distance between them. Even though Luca apologizes for his recklessness, Mavis cannot shake off the feeling of dread creeping upon her. She starts to think about her future and what she truly wants to achieve in life aside from helping people feel comfortable in their own skin. Beaumont comes to the conclusion that she wants to have a family and raise kids but Luca wouldn’t want that.

Mavis’ parents push her towards Jacque who proposes to her for marriage simultaneously. On a whim, Mavis agrees to marry Jacque, still believing that Luca doesn’t share her interests. As Luca video calls her, apologizing for his behaviour and appearing ready to wholly commit to her, Mavis realizes the mess she has created. She returns Jacque’s ring back, uses the ticket Luca brought for her and hops on a plane to Italy. Both Luca and Mavis reconcile, pushing their anxieties and issues aside.

As he confronts India regarding his position in her life, their relationship is shattered. India has deep feelings for him but she cannot just walk away from her son. She fails to assure Khalil of her feelings, leaving their relationship on the verge of destruction.
