Cash/Gold Brick Ending Explained: Who Snitched On Daniel? Why Did Patrick Partake In The Heist?

Set in the city of capitalists, Babylon, Jérémie Rozan directed Cash/Gold Brick is a French heist drama. Premiering on Netflix, Gold Brick revolves around a man who dares to go against the richest and the most influential family in the town. Daniel Sauveur (Raphaël Quenard) is a seemingly normal man, brought up by a middle-class family with high aspirations. He grew up staring at billboards and posters of the Breuil enterprise. Almost everybody in town worked for the Breuils, not by choice but due to the lack of opportunities.

Daniel vowed to never for the snobbish Breuils and so did his ride-or-die best friend, Scania (Igor Gotesman). As they grew up, their resolve strengthened and they established their own start-up. Meanwhile, the Breuils expanded their community under Armand Breuil’s (Joël Dupré La Tour) guidance and became the sole dealer of sumptuous French perfumes. Daniel and Scania’s transportation business slowly started to deteriorate but his resolution didn’t. Little did he know he was about to break his vow soon.

Cash/Gold Brick Plot Synopsis

Daniel tries his best to salvage his business but in the end, his sole client remains the Breuils whom he quickly becomes indebted to. Slowly, his start-up crumbles and Daniel is coerced by Scania into working for his arch-nemesis. The two of them, in order to repay their debt and sustain themselves along with their families, start to work under José Kowalski (Stéphan Wojtowicz). Soon they realise Kowalski, similar to his boss, derives pleasure humiliating people. Their grudge starts to intensify and transform into full-blown loathing soon.

Kowalski isn’t the only one at the end of Daniel’s repugnance, his ex-classmate, Patrick Breuil (Antoine Gouy), too, is on his list. While Armand is an egomaniac who ruthlessly chases his dreams, Patrick is the silent ruler who is forced to take charge of the organisation. After Armand’s death, the reign of the Breuils enterprise needs to be controlled by Patrick. His wife, Béatrice (Nina Meurisse), offers a bottle of exclusive perfume to everyone working for their organisation to celebrate her husband’s coronation.

Daniel has always found the whole concept of perfume absurd; he never understood why anyone would willingly spend thousands of dollars on a perfume. As he lists the Gold perfume he received from Béatrice for sale online, he is shocked to witness how much a mere flowery scent is worth. His shock turns into awe, later into a cunning plan.

Rather than stopping there, Daniel collaborates with local vendors who sell imported, luxurious goods.

After pushing aside Kowalski, Daniel’s greed heightens and so does the risk and the cash. Both Scania and Daniel start to purchase expensive items such as watches, cars and apartments. Daniel comes across Virginie Van Stratten (Agathe Rousselle) and is immediately drawn towards her. The next day, he finds out Virginie is the new General Manager and well, he isn’t delighted.

Virginie, on the other hand, is a tough nut to crack. She’s cynical and ambitious but when Patrick choses to not promote her, her fragile ego is shattered. When Daniel offers her a chance to exert revenge, Virginie jumps on it instantly.
