The docuseries takes us back to the year 1978, it was the month of August when three boats full of lively young individuals decided to stroll around the shores of Cavallo! What started as a short-distance trip, turned out to be a deadly nightmare. Birgit Hamer still regrets the day when it all happened. Due to a sudden change of weather, they couldn’t go back to the mainland, but no one could have ever seen this coming.

As they were not allowed to sail through the Bonifacio Strait, they decided to dine in a nearby restaurant! And this is when they saw him for the very first time, the culprit, the untitled King, Vittorio Emanuele. He was silently having lunch with his family but was heavily disturbed by this noisy group of men and women. Since they were all Italian, he was even more pissed to see them. Again, we cannot miss out on the fact that they took away his son’s dinghy to reach the restaurant. A few of them even claimed that he was very much angry about this whole thing.

Coming to Dirk’s unfortunate death, he was surely a victim of the wrong place. It all started as a sudden feud that occurred between Vittorio Emanuele and Nicky Pende and a third person had to pay for it. And then, comes the loud shooting noises. One of the bullets hit Dirk’s leg and thus comes the mystery murder case of the dark. All of these things happened in the boat, it was around midnight, and even today, the truth never had a chance to come out.

Dirk was immediately rushed to the boat and then to the Porto Hospital, he was bleeding heavily and with every passing hour, the tension was growing. His parents were called and within a night of investigation, Vittorio Emanuele was behind bars. Surprisingly, there was a statement written by Prince Emanuele which said that he had shot two bullets from his rifle and it might have injured Dirk Hamer. On the other side, Dirk was alive but his situation was getting worse. He was shifted to another hospital and even after 19 troubled surgeries, he couldn’t survive till last.

The French judicial system is best known for delivering justice. But after a prolonged fight of 13 years, when Vittorio Emanuele was taken down to the juror court, the opinions were changed. Finally, Birgit Hamer’s long-time wish was coming true, the trial was happening. Vittorio Emanuele’s whole family was present in the court! With the help of one of the finest lawyers, Sabine Paugam, the victim’s sister, Birgit Hamer managed to drag him down to the courtroom again. The much-awaited trial was taking place, according to the victim’s sister, a lot of evidence was there, and yet the final judgment disappointed her.

A young individual’s life was lost, and it was proved that the bullets found at the investigation site belonged to the exiled Prince. But a new story soon came up in the courtroom. It was played by lawyer Isolabella. According to his notice, there was another gun found on the boat and this one belonged to Victor Guglielmi. It was never used but according to his knowledge, two bullets were missing from this rifle as well. Again, there was a statement which said that not two, but three firings happened on 17th August 1978. This must have raised a lot of doubts and questions for the jurors.

And ultimately, the rulings came out, and to everyone’s surprise, Vittorio Emanuele was left without any major charges. He was just given a parole of 5 months and thus, he managed to get away with the crime. After years of staying in pain, the victim’s sister did hear about a tape where the untitled King accepted about killing Dirk Hamer. As a result, with further struggle and searching, Birgit did manage to reveal the tape to the whole world. But we still cannot overlook the fact that the Duke Of Savoy never really paid for his deeds.
