Is Thirteen Lives Based On A True Story?

Yes, this movie is based on a real story from Thailand’s Tham Luang cave rescue mission. It’s a very accurate dramatization of the real-life incident. The screenplay writer William Nicholson and the director and producer Ron Howard have put their efforts to make this film similar to what happened in the real incident. This movie depicts the true story quite well and the nail-biting events that took place.

What Was The Real Incident Behind It?

This incident took place in June 2018 when 12 boys who were between the ages of 11-16 years and their soccer coach got trapped while they were exploring a cave in Tham Luang Nang Non. They were planning to celebrate one of the player’s birthday there but they were left stranded due to a rainstorm which blocked their way out.

They drank water that was dripping down the cave walls and also they dug in the ground and huddled to keep themselves warm. The meditation taught by their coach helped the players to be calm.

After all the efforts made by the divers who came for the rescue on July 10, 2018, the boys were taken out of the cave alive. Also, the local Thai people came out for the rescue. But one of the cave divers died due to a lack of oxygen when he was coming out of the cave. Later on after a year another diver died due to an infection that was caused during the rescue.

This rescue mission required a lot of international effort. During the mission more than a billion litres of water was pumped out and there were more than ten thousand people involved in the mission.

Finally, all the trapped boys and their coach made it out of the cave with minor cuts and scratches.

Where Are The ‘Thirteen Lives’ Now?

A majority of the trapped rescuees still live in Thailand. They still have devotion towards their sports and also to education. The only English-speaking boy who spoke with the initial rescue groups has gone to the US. He is enrolled in the Master’s School in New York. The coach who was initially a monk has started his own football training academy called the Eakapol Academy.

The Summit!

The initial entry trial by the BCRC’s John Volanthen and Richard Stanton was a failure due to the bad weather. On their second attempt, they found the boys 4 km away from the mouth of the cave. This step became the foundation step of the journey of rescue. This rescue mission required more than 10,000 people with helicopters and ambulances helping them. This rescue needed a mass of equipment.

At any instant, there were 500 rescuers in the cave for searching the boys. More than a billion litres of water was drained from the cave letting the rescue mission go on and help the divers to find the boys and get them out soon. The challenges for the divers and rescuers increased when the oxygen level became only 15 per cent. This was to be handled by the divers with the rising water level as another challenge.

The boys had to be trawled. Lugging was the technique decided by the rescue team for getting the rescuees out of the cave. They were sedated and also re-sedated on the way. There were 18 divers who were sent inside to get them out. Each diver was assigned one boy and others were to assist them.

Luckily and miraculously every boy and their coach were taken out safely without anyone being dead in the mission except for one diver.

The film has successfully shown all these events in a real way and how they happened.
