The most significant annual K-pop awards ceremony, the MAMA show, will feature a reunion of Want a One? The Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMAs), based in South Korea, will be redesigned in 2021, according to the event organizers. On December 11, at 5 PM in Hong Kong, the 2021 MAMAS, which is hosted by South Korean media giant CJ ENM and telecast on Mnet, will be broadcast globally. The event’s host will be singer Lee Hyori. Additionally, the boy group Wanna One will play. They broke up in 2018 after it was discovered that Mnets highly polarising Produce 101 series had rigged the final lineups of several K-pop teams that emerged from it, including Wanna One. There will also be competitors from the well-known Street Woman Fighter dancing competition.

The MAMA event this year will change the format of the awards show as Mnet works to bolster its claim that it is; the Worlds No. 1 K-pop music awards celebration, MAMA is anticipated to stop being a regional event and instead expand to become a global one. While the MAMAs will take place in Seoul this year, and the show has previously been held in many places throughout Asia, Mnet also plans to host the occasion in The United States in the future. The award ceremony has also updated its metrics for awards, shifting away from being primarily fan vote-driven and metric-based award events and pivoting to including expert and industry judges for its principal categories. While fan voting, music earnings, and streaming will still be considered, the MAMA will move toward an expert panel in 2021. Three of the highest awards—artist of the year, song of the year, and album of the year—will be decided by metrics and the views of selected industry experts. Major prizes like the global fans choice of top 10 awards and the international symbol of the year will be selected solely by fan voting. The switch to panel judging is ostensibly an effort to increase openness and creative validation and comes after a history of Mnet programs being charged with ignoring fan voting choices.
