Marina Zenovich directed and produced The Way Down, a 2021 American documentary tv series. It follows Gwen Shamblin Lara, the inventor of the diet program Weigh Down Workshop, as well as Shamblin Lara’s new Christian community, The Remnant Society. Gwen Shamblin Lara and The Remnant Fellowship were the subjects of Nile Cappello’s investigation, and he spent months getting to know former members. Cappello pitched the idea to Campfire, which agreed to create the show and tapped Marina Zenovich to direct it.

The Way Down Season 2 Story
The narrative began when Nile Cappello, a “badass story hunter,” was investigating female cult leaders and stumbled upon Shamblin. She then went to Campfire Entertainment, which co-produced the show with Teigen’s Huntley Productions and sold it to HBO Max, with whom they had previously collaborated with Heaven’s Gate.
Gwen Shamblin Lara and her husband perished in a plane crash shortly before the series was to be completed, so the team shifted gears and filmed two additional episodes, interviewing more people about the contentious Remnant Fellowship Church and its leader.
The crew stated that Shamblin’s death provided them with a certain level of independence, which resulted in many incoming calls.
Shamblin Lara, who created the Tennessee-based church and rose to renown with her Weigh Down Workshop, a Christian-based diet regimen, is the subject of the series. Despite their carefully cultivated image, Lara and the church were soon accused of cult-like tactics, including emotional, psychological, and physical violence, as well as exploitation.
The Way Down examines the legacy of Remnant’s infamous leader, while the second part delves into the strange circumstances surrounding the crash’s cause an investigation into its aftermath, such as different storylines from former people who survived who felt it necessary to share their experiences following Shamblin’s death.

Gwen Shamblin Lara was an American novelist and the founder of the Remnant Fellowship as well as the Christian diet program The Weight Down Workshop.
Lara graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and a master’s in diet and nutrition with a focus in Biochemistry. She spent five years at Tennessee State University as a licensed dietician, consultant, and faculty member. She also spent five years with the city’s Tennessee State Health Department. Lara grew up in a family that belonged to the Church of Christ. She was the mother of two children and the grandmother of seven grandkids.
