About The Big Leap
Big Ballet is a Channel 4 documentary series produced by Rare Day and shown in the United Kingdom. On February 6, 2014, the three-episode series aired for the first time. It accompanied Wayne Sleep and prima ballerina, Monica Loughman, as they collaborated with a group of amateur dancers to make their ambition of performing Swan Lake a reality.
The dancers, who were referred to as “fat” or “real women” in the program, were all much larger than the standard in classical ballet; yet, the leaner dancers would not be classified as “plus-size” in most cases.
Matthew Bourne, Derek Deane, Patricia Doyle, David Plumpton, Tamara Rojo, David Nixon, and the English National Ballet were among the guests on the show. Most of the footage was shot at the Northern Ballet, with the final performance taking place in front of 1,500 people at St George’s Hall in Bradford. Five hundred people responded to the advertisements.
The Big Leap Season 2 Story
The dancers of the Big Ballet have only five weeks to produce their own 25-minute Swan Lake version. This isn’t, however, a full-time ballet company. Evening and weekend classes must be scheduled around job and family obligations. As the physicality of the job ahead and the immensity of what they have taken on start to take their toll on the dancers, the strain mounts. Monica and Wayne are under pressure as well; in addition to getting the dancers ballet-ready, they must create a Swan Lake performance that will astound the reviewers.
The set, clothing, and music must all be breath-taking. Wayne and Monica have taught the dancers basic ballet techniques and have cast all the roles. With fewer than five weeks until the dancers play their supersize Swan Lake in front of a 1500-person audience, including all the great and the good of the ballet establishment, the dancers are exhausted from months of training, physical setbacks, and nervousness.
