Who Is Bass Reeves?

You’ve probably heard of Reeves before, as he is among the most fabled characters from the Old West. In addition to appearing as a character on Wynonna Earp and Legends of Tomorrow, the real-life lawman has also been mentioned in Watchmen and Justified. Reeves was reputed to have never been hurt while making an arrest, even though he dealt with violent offenders. Historians have speculated that Reeves served as the model for the Lone Ranger.

When Bennie murdered his wife, he even had to arrest Bennie, his own son. Reeves, who was enlisted in the United States Marshals in 1875, was born into slavery in 1838. Serving there until 1893, he was sent to the Western District of Arkansas, which was responsible for the area that was then known as Indian Territory. When Oklahoma became a state in 1907, Reeves was relieved of his duties as a U.S. Marshal, although he remained a law enforcement officer until 1909. He passed away in 1910 at the age of 71.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves: Backstory

The intriguing life of Bass Reeves, the first Black Deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River, was reportedly the inspiration behind Lawmen: Bass Reeves, but you wouldn’t know it from Paramount+’s tasteless historical drama.

Early on in its development, the show created a lot of buzz because it was originally supposed to be a spin-off of 1883 set in the Yellowstone universe (Taylor Sheridan is still listed as an executive producer). However, it was later split off as the first season of a new anthology series called Lawmen, which is expected to feature new well-known law enforcement officers in subsequent seasons.

It’s likely that Bass Reeves lost some of its artistic personality when it lost the Yellowstone link and changed into an anthology halfway through its creation; seeing these early episodes certainly gives that impression. It’s not a poor programme with an extensive list of drawbacks; rather, it’s a show that plays it extremely safe and has few redeeming qualities.

The connection between Bass and his wife Jennie, who offers a secure sanctuary for Bass to recover, refill, and feed his heart after days and weeks on the trails, serves as the series’ emotional centre. Sometimes we follow her without Bass, but other than raising her children and taking care of the house, she doesn’t do much else. Still, Lawmen: Bass Reeves makes an effort to really capitalise on their moments together at the farmhouse.
