Revolving around grotesque humanoids, the Roar Uthaug directorial, Troll, is a Norwegian action thriller. Blending in mythological beliefs and infusing refreshing twists to the stereotypical genre, the film has succeeded in portraying a compelling yet flabbergasting drama. The Norwegian thriller, penned by Espen Aukan, is more of an extended fantasy that tries to weave several concepts into one. The film tries to incorporate emotional elements backed by ruthless actions, delivering what is easily perceived as a derivative plot. Nonetheless, the end result is a blockbuster film led by Homesick’s Ine Marie Wilmann.
Naturally, due to the immense success of the debut film, Troll 2 has become highly anticipated. So, now, if you are wondering whether this Netflix drama has been approved for a sequel, here is your chance!
Troll 2 Release Date
In the late 2010s, when Uthaug wrapped the production of Tomb Raider, he decided to pursue his folklore-inspired idea. The Cold Prey director aspired to conjure a thriller film based on the concept of Trolls, a gigantic creature that’s nearly invincible, set in Norway. Reportedly, Uthaug pondered over the idea for nearly two decades before collaborating with Motion Blur executives and breathing life into his imagination. Nearly three years after Uthaug’s meeting, he wrapped the production and Troll dropped on Netflix in December 2022. The film has been credited as one of the best works of Roar, having amassed millions of dollars in revenue.
In a pre-screening interview, when asked about the future plans, Uthaug and the producer, Kristian Strand Sinkerud expressed their eagerness to conjure a sequel. They claimed to “have ambitions to make a sequel and perhaps two sequels, but it all depends on how the audience is responding to [the film].” And with the warm response the film garnered, Uthaug’s ambition seems to come true. Now after almost a year since the debut aired, Netflix has finally terminated the wait and greenlit the sequel.
With Uthaug’s Godzilla-sized vision for the sequel, another folklore spin-off seems to be just a couple of months away. Reportedly, Troll 2 is currently in production and is expected to be released in late 2024. While the streaming giant has expressed its interest in expanding the franchise, all other details are currently being kept under tabs.
The Troll Film Overview
Trudging along the realm of Godzilla and King Kong, Netflix’s Troll follows a palaeontologist, Nora Tidemann (Ine Maria Wilmann). She grew up listening to Norwegian fantasy tales and being enamoured by the mythological beliefs instilled in her by her father, Tobias (Gard B. Eldsvold). After Tobias’ sudden disappearance, Nora begins to pursue her passion. She aims to fulfil her father’s dream of watching her untangle the mystery of Trolls and prove that the folktales are not a myth.
After an unfortunate eruption that swallows thousands of people, Nora and her team begin their investigation process. Though the majority of the scientists believe that the miners accidentally stepped on a methane-clad zone, Nora soon discovers gigantic footprints. She then embarks on a mission to prove the existence of Trolls, a species of ginormous humanoids that once dominated the Earth. On her quest, Nora accidentally awakes a majestic Troll, who then raises havoc in Norway.
What To Expect From Troll 2?
Eventually, Nora and her team succeed in encompassing the Troll with the aid of sunlight. However, instead of slaughtering the beast or its children, the government and Nora agree to let the Troll family live in peace. Unfortunately, the sun rises on the horizon, spreading its glimmering rays onto the Troll’s skin and incinerating it in return. While the townsfolk rejoice in Troll’s death, Nora is as disheartened as sceptical. As she wonders whether another Troll is lurking in the thick forest, a roar followed by a commotion renders her speechless.
Uthaug and Aukan have set the stage for Troll 2 already by teasing the viewers with another plausible Troll attack. While it seems obvious that another massive creature, possibly even more destructive, is awaiting us in the sequel, it remains to be seen how Nora and her team will deal with it.
