Reportedly, Uthaug pondered over the idea for nearly two decades before collaborating with Motion Blur executives and breathing life into his imagination. Nearly three years after Uthaug’s meeting, he wrapped the production and Troll dropped on Netflix in December 2022. The film has been credited as one of the best works of Roar, having amassed millions of dollars in revenue.
In a pre-screening interview, when asked about the future plans, Uthaug and the producer, Kristian Strand Sinkerud expressed their eagerness to conjure a sequel. They claimed to “have ambitions to make a sequel and perhaps two sequels, but it all depends on how the audience is responding to [the film].” And with the warm response the film garnered, Uthaug’s ambition seems to come true. Now after almost a year since the debut aired, Netflix has finally terminated the wait and greenlit the sequel.

Trudging along the realm of Godzilla and King Kong, Netflix’s Troll follows a palaeontologist, Nora Tidemann (Ine Maria Wilmann). She grew up listening to Norwegian fantasy tales and being enamoured by the mythological beliefs instilled in her by her father, Tobias (Gard B. Eldsvold). Eventually, Nora and her team succeed in encompassing the Troll with the aid of sunlight. However, instead of slaughtering the beast or its children, the government and Nora agree to let the Troll family live in peace. Unfortunately, the sun rises on the horizon, spreading its glimmering rays onto the Troll’s skin and incinerating it in return. While the townsfolk rejoice in Troll’s death, Nora is as disheartened as sceptical. As she wonders whether another Troll is lurking in the thick forest, a roar followed by a commotion renders her speechless.
Uthaug and Aukan have set the stage for Troll 2 already by teasing the viewers with another plausible Troll attack. While it seems obvious that another massive creature, possibly even more destructive, is awaiting us in the sequel, it remains to be seen how Nora and her team will deal with it.
