The anime is set in the post-APE world where humans are outnumbered by artificial intelligence and humanity is on the verge of extinction. In the 21st century, some genius minds of the APE organization collaborated together and discovered the key to immortality. However, their research had a drawback. Immortality came with the price of losing reproductive abilities and children would have to be created and sustained in labs. This led to a division between adults and children and the vedge between them only proved fruitful to this disastrous organization.
If this self-induced apocalypse wasn’t enough, Earth was bombarded by giant creatures entitled Klaxosaurs. In such a world, Hiro, a parasite–artificially created human–and Zero Two, a half-Klaxosaur half-human, stumble across each other. They are met with hundreds of hurdles, thousands of people revolt against them and yet, they cling to their hope. Their aspirations to lead humanity to thrive again and their flourishing emotions towards each other fuel their flight.
