The final choice of Marta in the series is a shocking one. After the return of her past lover, she is faced with the dilemma of choosing between her two lovers. She has nurtured sympathy for both of them, but over the past years, her feelings for Niko have changed (which is inevitable).
Hence, when Niko returns after 30 years, she does not know whom to choose anymore. Therefore, her final choice is neither of them. In the last episode, Marta chooses herself. She does not want to associate with either of her past lovers and wants to have a fresh start away from her past.
