Where Are The Costa Concordia Survivors Now? Current Status Of The Survivors!

When we are travelling either on the road, sea or the air, we do not always think about what danger can welcome us. However, whenever we are travelling, anything may happen to us that we are not aware of beforehand. Such was the case with the Titanic. Did people ever expect the strongest ship to sink? Nobody did, but it happened. History repeated itself with Costa Concordia. Unlike the case of the Titanic, where many people lost their lives, the casualties were not much during the Costa Concordia disaster. However, we cannot pretend as if nothing happened, right? If you want to know more about the disaster, you will have to read below.

Where Are The Costa Concordia Survivors Now?

The Costa Concordia disaster is considered as Europe’s one of the worst maritime disasters. This took place in the winter of 2012. The cruise ship had a strong build, and it was built to carry thousands of people. However, the cruise ship did remain any stronger after that night in 2012. It was a night when people lost their lives, and some lost their close ones. The disaster could have been avoided if the captain had been careful enough.

Among the 4352 people who were on board the ship, 4221 people survived. The rest 32 people were considered dead in the disaster. Currently, the survivors have spent a decade after the accident. Even if 11 years have passed since the disaster, the survivors cannot forget the screams and the shouts of the terrible night when the ship sank like their fates. Most people thought that it was their last time breathing, but fortunately, the number of casualties did not exceed the limit of 32. Last year, there was a commemoration held in memory of the lives that were lost on the disastrous night of 2012.

On that cruise ship, people were celebrating the happy moments of their lives. However, nobody knew how those moments would turn into the darkest ones. According to the news channel Today, Ian Donoff, one of the survivors, was on the ship celebrating his honeymoon with his newly wedded wife. Reuters interviewee Ester Percossi’s words have confirmed that she has been suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after the incident. This is not the case with Percossi only. The other survivors of the night have also been suffering the same since the disorder.

Currently, the survivors are living their lives, but they have never boarded any cruise ship since the incident, and they never will.

Costa Concordia Accident

Where Are The Costa Concordia Survivors Now?

You might be thinking about how this accident took place with this luxury cruise ship. Was not the ship well maintained? Yes, the ship was extremely well maintained. As has been mentioned above, the tragedy was due to a manmade cause. It was not any natural accident. This was caused due to the ignorant behaviour of the ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino. If it had not been for him, the tragedy would not have occurred. He has been sentenced to serve in the jail for a period of 16 years.

Since he knew that he would face charges against him, he fled the situation after causing the accident. The accident took place on 13th January 2012 at 9:45 PM. Off the coast of Giglio, an Italian Island, the captain steered the ship in the wrong direction. As a result, there was a collision of the ship’s keel against the coastal reef in the Tyrrhenian Sea. This collision left a massive gash on one side of the luxury cruise ship leading to its sinking on that side.

Since the accident took place in winter, the water was cold. People had to jump into the water in that freezing temperature of a winter night. Another survivor of the accident, Nate Lukes, stated that he saw the entire situation unfold before his eyes. People were pushing each other out of their way to save their lives. It was horrifying and pathetic. Natives of the neighbouring island helped as many people as possible on that impossible night. Reuters has made it known that the captain was termed as the “coward captain”. While the captain fled, one of the crew members, Russel Rebello, gave his life helping people.

Costa Concordia Documentary

Like the incident of the Titanic has got a blockbuster movie, the incident of Costa Concordia has received several documentaries that are available. These episodes can be easily streamed on YouTube if you are willing to know more about the entire incident.

It can be concluded that the survivors are living their respective lives currently, and we wish that they continue to do so.
