Smother In Law Season 2 Review And Ending Explained: Doting Mother-In-Law Or Disastrous Monster-In-Law?

Ranking sixth on Netflix’s highest-streamed Brazilian sitcoms, Smother In Law Season 1 was a highly ambivalent series. It received several critical appraisals and denouncements, having mixed reviews despite its stellar rankings. Smother In Law delights into being the first Brazilian multi-camera sitcom. Revolving around Dona Isadir, this series has a fairly simple plot but a rather comical interpretation.

Even if season 1 didn’t receive as much appraisal as the makers, Rodrigo Sant’Anna, Wagner Trindade and Alex Cabral, took the bold decision of manifesting another season. As one might expect, the creators would take the storyline of the series to another level. But, surprisingly, they haven’t stepped beyond the classic 90s melodrama. As I was wondering whether Smother In Law Season 2 improvised itself, you must be sharing the same thoughts, too. In this Smother In Law season 2 review and ending explained, let us discover the answer to our questions!

Smother In Law Season 2: Isadir Makes A Grand Comeback

Written by the popular comedians Rodrigo Sant’Anna and Wagner Trinade, Smother In Law introduces us to a myriad of characters. Leading them all is Dona Isadir, portrayed by Sant’Anna herself. The grey-haired, spectacle-clad old bird suddenly drops unannounced at her son Carlos’ doorstep during the pandemic. Since she has rented her apartment to her best friend, Fatima’s son, Cezhina, Isadir has nowhere to live. And what better place to reside than your son’s?

Even though Carlos’ wife, Alice, is skeptical initially, she agrees to let her mother-in-law live with them. Of course, they all know Isadir isn’t just looking for a roof but also to smother Alice. Here ensues a dramatic cat-mouse chase between Alice and Isadir with the latter having the upper hand always. In the last season, we witnessed how Isadir tried to pluck Alice from her son’s life. At the end of Smother In Law season 1, we witnessed Isadir getting arrested for illegal parking and bearing drugs in the car. Only, the limousine was Cezhina’s but the blame was put on Isadir. In this season, Isadir is back with her old criticizing personality.

Smother In Law Season 2 Review And Ending Explained

Alice and Carlos are expecting another child and have decided to throw a gender reveal party on the same day Isadir is being released from prison. But as always, Alice’s fate isn’t on her side and the party organizer, Lucinha, quits the job at the last moment. As always, Isadir takes it upon herself to meddle with her daughter-in-law’s life and starts to organize the party. Marinez, the housekeeper, being Isadir’s fan starts to cackle at her attempts while Fatima serves as Isadir’s assistant.

Both Jonas and Marcia, Isadir’s grandchildren, are also a part of team Isalove. As the series progresses, we witness Isadir’s relentless attempts at interfering in Carlos and Alice’s lives. She tries her hand at being a social media influencer and earning quick bucks using the hashtag Isalove. However, her attempts at making it to the big leagues fail when she starts to receive odd gifts instead of dollars. Each time Isadir tries to do something optimistic, she ends up making Alice’s life a mess with Carlos being caught in the crossfire.

Smother In Law Season 2 Ending Explained

Getting sick of Isadir, Alice and Carlos craft a master plan. They hide the news of Carlos’ promotion and their migration to Sao Paulo from Isadir brilliantly. Even though everyone else in Isadir’s huge family knows about Carlos’ promotion and Alice’s plan, they all hide it from the old bird artistically even Fatima, Isadir’s reliable sidekick. Alice and Carlos are interested in leaving their mansion in Rio and moving to Paulo but their children, Jonas and Marcia, are not ready to leave their grams yet.

Given that Noah, Alice and Carlos’ newborn, is still young and prone to vulnerability, Isadir tries using this as an excuse. But since Alice is now fed up with tolerating her smother-in-law, she drags her husband and children overnight to Paulo, away from Isadir. Marinez, who is generally at Isadir’s side, also agrees to move with Alice for a better stipend. With everyone out of the house and the city, Isadir is left alone with her best friend, Fatima, and Fatima’s son. Only if Isadir were someone to relent this easily.

Packing her bags, and grabbing Fatima, Cezhina and his boyfriend, Isadir plans a surprise for her son and daughter-in-law. Her so-called surprise includes a long trip to Sao Paulo at Carlos’ place. Whether it is a surprise, a shock or a curse is yet to be determined though.

Smother In Law Season 2 Review: The Meddling Old Bird Is More Overbearing Than Entertaining

The Brazilian sitcom, Smother In Law, appears to be perfectly crafted on paper. It has a stellar cast ensemble with the comedian Sant’Anna leading the crew. The storyline seems hilarious in theory with an over-imposing mother-in-law trying to give her daughter-in-law a hard time and yearning for her son’s attention. But when it comes down to execution, the 10-episode-long series just doesn’t seem worth it. The show is running in circles with Alice always ending up on the other side of the sword and Isadir gaining the upper hand.

Carlos seems a weak character as well, the maid has a better personality than him in the series though. Everything in Smother In Law season 2 seems like a dragged continuation of season 1 with no improvements. For someone who is looking for a quick watch, this series could work well. But for people like me who don’t enjoy over-the-top melodramatic shows, Smother In Law isn’t it. If I were to rate the series, it would be a disappointing 3.5 on 10 with the points being graciously earned by Fatima’s broad perspective.
