The Tailor Season 1 Review

Sewing clothes, hiding secrets and bearing an insurmountable amount of baggage arrive with this new Turkish thriller. Cagatay Ulusoy stars in the role of a popular designer, Peyami Dokumaci. The Tailor Season 1, directed by Cem Karci, recently dropped on Netflix with 7 episodes in a one-hour-long timeframe. And ain’t it a mind-numbing rollercoaster? It is a Turkish mystery thriller that sticks to the genre tightly or shall I say it is sewn to the genre? The highlight of The Tailor is its strong narration with both the leading characters, Peyami and Esvet (Şifanur Gül). Though the series has only 7 episodes to its name, the writers, Rana Mamatlıoğlu and Bekir Baran Sıtkı, have packed too many story arcs into it. And all of this could be a little overwhelming, right? So, here I am, breaking down the entire 7 episode series today! Let us begin with The Tailor Review And Ending Explained! The Tailor Season 1 Recap The series starts on a messy note starring Ulusoy as a leading fashion designer, Peyami Dokumaci. He is busy in a fashion show, running after models and barking orders to his assistant. It is a well-depicted day-to-day scene of a tailor’s life. What follows is exceptionally normal as well. Peyami goes on bickering with his attention-seeking best friend, Dimitri and continues his regular routine. Peyami’s well-crafted routine is disturbed when his grandfather expires, leaving him spiralling down into an abyss of past memories. Peyami has a troubled past and it weighs down on him as he walks down the lane of nostalgia. His father, Mustafa, suffers from a mental health condition, making his intelligence equal to a child. Mustafa is Peyami’s greatest source of embarrassment and torment. Due to his father being known as Mad Master, Peyami has been bullied throughout his childhood. Now, as an adult, Peyami still holds his father’s weak mindset over him. But now, Mustafa and Sulun, Peyami’s grandmother, pose a threat to Peyami’s pristine reputation. Both of them move in with Peyami and since Mustafa’s caretaker has quit, it is another burden on Peyami. Yes, his own father has become a burden for him. Esvet Leaves Dimitri Steaming In Anger Back to work, Peyami visits his best friend for a last-minute fitting. Dimitri is as arrogant and self-centred as possible, adding sadism to the list as well. He tortures his would-be-wife, Esvet, when she asks for time to think. His height of paranoia is highlighted when Peyami is blindfolded at the time of Esvet’s bridal dress fitting. Being the leading designer Peyami is, he doesn’t need a measuring tape or his eyes–well for measurement at least. Esvet’s coughing is relentless, her shivering is indication enough that this marriage is not for love but for convenience. Since Esvet’s adoptive parents are running low on money, they decide to marry off Esvet to Dimitri without caring about Esvet’s well-being. So, in order to protect herself from the blood-thirsty vultures around her, she runs off to Peyami and auditions for the position of caregiver. Of course, she is selected without getting anyone suspicious. Esvet even changes her name to Firuze and develops a bond with Mustafa. A News That Changes The Dynamics Entirely While everything seems normal for Esvet so far, there lurks another secret around the corner. Peyami and Esvet start to develop a bond with the latter modelling for Peyami. The shocking news is delivered by Sulun. She offers Esvet a permanent position–something that Esvet dearly desires now that she is on a run–on the condition that she will have to marry Mustafa. The narrative shifts to Esvet’s past when her adoptive parents brought her in to take care of their physically challenged son. Yes, the world is selfish and it is no surprise On the other hand, Dimitri is wreaking havoc in search of Esvet’s search. Talk about complications or wait a minute, there is more! Esvet is adopted by Dimitri’s aunt and now he is holding it over their head. No Esvet, no money and money is the greatest asset here. The Tailor Season 1 Ending Explained: Is Peyami Alive? Who Shoots Him? Esvet meets her father after she leaves Peyami’s house since she doesn’t want to marry Mustafa. Dimitri almost catches her but somehow, she manages to run away. With nowhere to return, Esvet knocks on Sullun’s doorstep again and marries Mustafa. Peyami, however, isn’t aware of it. A while later, when he watches Esvet dressed in the same dress he designed for Dimitri’s fiance, all the pieces of the puzzle assemble together for him. Though Peyami throws a fit initially and accuses Esvet of being a cheater, he later calms down upon discovering her backstory. She has been tormented by everyone in her life and while Peyami is no saint, he cannot help himself. His feelings towards Esvet get the better of him and he ends up hiding Esvet from everyone. At the end of The Tailor, Sullun stands against Esvet and almost kicks her out by accusing her of destroying their family’s relationship with Dimitri. Peyami sticks by her but even he knows Dimitri needs clarification. So, both Esvet and Peyami, decide to come clean. Turns out it isn’t the piece of cake they assumed it to be. Dimitri and Peyami find themselves brawling like kids. Their fight ends with Dimitri holding a gun over Peyami’s head and Esvet holding another on Dimitri’s head. The love triangle ends with Peyami being shot by Esvet who wanted to protect him. Whether Peyami is alive or dead is yet to be clarified though. The Tailor Season 1 Review: A Suspense Thriller That Couldn’t Sew A Proper Story I simply cannot bring myself to not commence the review of this mystery thriller by pointing out that this is by far the most fast-paced absurd love story. Or was it even a love story? I don’t think so. The Tailor borders on tragedy more than a thriller. While I have to compliment the writers for developing the characters this efficiently, I cannot find any other points to appraise it. The story on paper seems engrossing but the execution is just point-blank. The characters and cast are the only saving grace for The Tailor. It is not a series I would recommend to you if you aren’t looking for something serious. The Tailor will sorely disappoint you if you are looking for something meaningful even if it promises that initially. The Tailor stands at 4 on 10 for me.
