Stephen passed away on 22 July 2017 when he was overlooking Alessia crossing the Arch. Kennan was the safety chief and by observing that Zecchini always pushed herself beyond her potential he wanted to help her. This was the time when Zecchini wanted to set the world record of crossing the Blue Hole Arch. So it was normal freediving where Zecchini had to go down from one side and meet Kennan the other side. After they met each other they had to come to the surface. But everything didn't go according to the plan and Zecchini and Stephen didn't meet each other for 30 seconds. Thereafter, Zecchini was found by Kennan and he used his last efforts to save Alessia. Kennan drowned in the depths of the water and saved Zecchini.
