Directed by Hyoe Yamamoto, Missing: The Lucie Blackman Case conjoints shreds of evidence, opinions and theories. When Blackman and Phillips arrived on a ninety-day work visa back in 2000, they were looking for a career transition and adventure. In their early 20s, the girls were a bit reckless, too. They swapped their existing jobs to accommodate their aspiration to live a carefree life and became bar hostesses in Japan’s popular district, Roppongi.

Both Lucie and Louise were enjoying the hustle and bustle of the town but there was more to the job, too. They were also indulging themselves in dōhan, a Japanese tradition that implies paid dates. These girls went on to dates with high-paying customers once a month, embracing the lavish lifestyle they aspired to. However, one date proved to be fatal for Lucie since she never witnessed broad daylight again.

In June 2000, Blackman went on a date but suddenly disappeared after this anonymous meeting. Louise started getting worried but couldn’t bring herself to pick up her mobile and let Lucie’s parents know of the incident. She kept kindling hope for her friend to either respond to her messages and calls or show up. But nothing along this realm occurred.

Was Lucie A Part Of A Religious Cult?

A day after Lucie’s disappearance, Louise received a mysterious call from a man who identified himself as Akira Takagi. He informed Blackman of Lucie’s decision to join a religious cult and asked her to not disturb her again. Moreover, Takagi referred to Lucie as a trainee in her training period and threatened Louise that her friend wouldn’t ever return to her back. Panicked, Louise finally gathered the courage to pick up her mobile and let Blackman’s family know of the incidents.

Two days after the phone call, Louise’s sister, Sophie, set foot in Japan followed by her father, Tim, a week later. The duo registered Lucie’s missing person report and tried to find her on a personal level along with Louise, too. However, the federal officers didn’t express the same concerns as the Blackmans. They believed Lucie was a free-spirited woman who might have found someone and run away with him. Despite the theory being ridiculous, the police officers didn’t want to elaborate on the investigation.

Naturally, the Blackmans took matters into their hand and launched themselves into searching for Lucie. Tim started distributing pamphlets and conducted several press conferences to draw the attention of the world toward his missing daughter. As if meeting with prime ministers and other officials weren’t enough, Tim also announced prize money to anyone who could lead him to their daughter. Blackman tried hiring investigators, too, but nothing worked in his favour.

Lucie was swallowed up by a black hole and there were no traces left of the young woman. When an anonymous businessman raised the reward, the suspicions rose high. The officers were now convinced that Lucie’s missing case had more than it met the eye. A month later, the police received an anonymous letter in which Lucie asked the police to leave her alone. Neither the federal officers nor Tim believed the letter to be written by Lucie. Instead, they were now convinced that Lucie was in deep trouble and had to be saved sooner. However, they couldn’t get any trace of what happened to Lucie.

Seven months later, Lucie’s body was found in an abandoned cave on the outskirts of Tokyo. Her corpse was almost decomposed and chopped into several pieces. Her head was shaven and she was most likely subjected to physical and mental abuse. The cave in which Lucie was found was merely a few hundred metres away from one of the endless properties of Joji Obara, a businessman and the alleged murderer.

Upon investigation, Obara was convicted of murdering and assaulting hundreds of women. However, only a couple of those have been proven in the judiciary. But the federal officers are convinced of Joji’s monstrosity. After seven years of trial, Obara was proven guilty of murdering and assaulting Lucie.
