Shalini is an alias for a real-life Nimisha who is an aspiring nurse–or well, she was an aspiring before everything went downhill. Just like every other sophomore, Shalini was equally excited and hopeful when she joined a college and moved in with the other girls. But then, Asifa (Sonia Balani), her roommate starts her mission. She starts to manipulate the three of them–Shalini, Nimah and Gitanjali. Soon, Shalini finds herself falling for a non-Hindu man but it isn’t the love she hoped for.

Shalini, like the rest of the girls, was a victim of radicalization and love jihad (a concept used to refer to the religious transformation of a Hindu girl). She later married Eesa, the man who purposefully targeted her, after both of them found out Shalini was pregnant. They left Kerala to join the ISIS army but Shalini’s husband was killed  After her husband was killed in a flight, Shalini was arrested along with her daughter, Umme Kulusu. Now, Umme Kulusu and Shalini are locked in Afghanistan prison and are serving a sentence for terrorism.

Even though there is no concrete evidence or true photos of Umme Kulusu, Shalini’s statements serve as a base for the claims listed here. One such claim clarifies that Shalini Unnikrishnan’s daughter, Umme Kulusu, is still alive. As we all know, the judicial system in Afghanistan doesn’t go easy on anyone–not even children–Umme Kulusu is beside her mother, surviving the torture that she should be spared.

Shalini is alive and healthy as we know so far and it seems like her daughter is, too. Whether they reside in the same prison cell or whether Umme Kulusu will be sent to a hostel or some kind of juvenile system is still to be unveiled. Some rumours even claim that Umme Kulusu is dead since there are hardly any images or information available regarding her, they are just rumours.

Shakini (originally Nimisha) hails from a Hindu family with her brother serving as a major in the Indian army. Her mother is still adamant about retrieving her daughter from the Afghanistan prison, but her efforts have been futile so far. The entire family has been betrayed by Shalini who ran away with her husband after making her family falsely believe that the couple were heading for Sri Lanka to start a business. Yet, they are trying to get ahold of their daughter for years now but to no avail.

Many of the forums and online litigations are now supporting the release of this innocent child after the Kerala Story has been released worldwide and is performing surprisingly well. But so far, there is no confirmed update regarding whether they will be out of prison soon. These forums allege that Shalini wasn’t at fault for becoming an ISIS-based terrorist since she was brainwashed into doing so. Whether their arguments would be considered by the government of both countries is still something we have to wait to discover.
