Is Royalteen: Princess Margrethe Based On A True Story? What Does It Portray?

A tale of romance blended with self-consciousness and mental health issues, Royalteen: Princess Margrethe is now streaming on Netflix! It is a Norwegian teenage drama centred around a royal princess. It is a sequel to the movie Royalteen that focused on the crown prince Karl John aka Kalle (Mathias Storhoi) and a teenage mom, Lena (Ines Hoysæter Asserson). Their relationship has already caused a scandal for the Norwegian monarchy with Queen Sofia (Kirsti Stubo) and King Sverre (Frode Winther) left to handle the mess. In this movie, the limelight is on the Norwegian princess, Margrethe (Elli Muller Osborne).

In the debut movie, Margrethe was the self-centred epitome of perfection. Be it catwalks or holding a glass of wine, Margrethe did it all with utmost perfection. In this sequel, however, the tables have turned and the true Margrethe is unveiled. Is she a real person? Is Royalteen: Princess Margrethe based on a true story? Does it portray the true Norwegian monarchy? Answers below!

Is Royalteen: Princess Margrethe Based On A True Story?

Is Royalteen: Princess Margrethe Based On A True Story?

Directed by Ingvild Soderlind, Netflix’s Royalteen: Princess Margrethe is poles apart from the streaming giants’ latest monarch-based series. Be it Queen Cleopatra or African Queens: Njinga, all these have been centred around some well-established monarchs–or highlight their process of conquering the throne. Royalteen: Princess Margrethe is nothing like those series, it doesn’t portray Margrethe’s desire to own the throne or the crown. She has too much on her plate already and doesn’t want to add to the mess.

That doesn’t mean fate is on her side. Margrethe’s list of secrets keeps piling up and her anxiety issues keep flourishing. Moreover, the carefully concealed truths of the monarch are starting to pop up. Given Royalteen: Princess Margrethe is highly dramatic and sticks closely to our perception of monarchy, questions regarding it being a true story have garnered traction. Written by Randi Fuglehaug, Anne Gunn Halvorsen and Marta Huglen Revheim, the movie is wholly fictional. Royalteen: Princess Margrethe is not based on a true story even if the events feel artistically real.

What Is Royalteen: Princess Margrethe Based On?

Netflix’s Royalteen: Princess Margrethe has been shot in some iconic locations. The picturesque background and the ice-laden landscape have all contributed to the glamour of the movie. The most alluring thing about Royalteen: Princess Margrethe still remains its backstory, the locations and the star-studded cast ensemble joining the league later.

Each one of us–me specifically–enjoys a good royal romance. Put in a few secrets, the forbidden trope and nothing stops a royal romance from charting high on Netflix’s most-watched list. If Royalteen: Princess Margrethe has garnered this much popularity, it is due to Randi Fuglehaug and Anne Gunn Halvorsen. Their eponymous novel series is the inspiration Soderlind took upon and manifested in two Norwegian royal romance movies.

The first movie, Royalteen, centred around Kalle and Lena is based on the first book of Fuglehaug and Halvorsen’s novel series, The Heir. Royalteen: Princess Margrethe is based on the second book of  Fuglehaug and Halvorsen’s titular novel series. It is a fictional story imagined by Fuglehaug and Halvorsen and brushed up by Marta Huglen Revheim.

Does Royalteen: Princess Margrethe Showcase True Norwegian Monarchy?

Is Royalteen: Princess Margrethe Based On A True Story?

It feels like we have passed the age of monarchy, hasn’t it? Well, the truth contradicts our perception. There are still many countries such as Britain and Norway that still possess and value the monarchs. Movies like this one emphasize these countries’ priced possessions; the royal families. With Royalteen: Princess Margrethe’s strong portrayal of the Norwegian monarchy, this question has become profound. Does Royalteen: Princess Margrethe showcase true Norwegian monarchy?

Well, it doesn’t. It portrays the Norwegian monarchy, its standards, lifestyle, secrets and more with precision. The creators derive inspiration from their existing knowledge, the novel series, the existing royal families and more. However, Royalteen: Princess Margrethe does not emphasize the true royal families of Norway.

Is Princess Margrethe A Real Person?

Portrayed by Elli Muller Osborne, Margrethe is an ice princess. She knows how to carry herself with grace, how to wear a mask of steel and never let anyone glimpse behind it. But when alcohol is flowing into her bloodstream, she is a different person altogether. She is just Margrethe, a normal teenager who is yearning to be loved and accepted. After the scandal her brother, Kalle, caused Margrethe knows she cannot do the same and bring shame to the monarchy. She tries hard, very, very hard but eventually, her desire to love and be loved like a normal person gets the better of her.

The story does seem engrossing and completely fantastical, doesn’t it? That is because it is fictionalized and there exists no such person called Princess Margrethe. It is the plot and Osborne’s commendable acting skills that make us believe Princes Margrethe to be a real person even if she isn’t.
