Royalteen: Princess Margrethe Recap

Royalteen: Princess Margrethe Review And Ending Explained

Directed by Ingvild Soderlind and written by Randi Fuglehaug, Anne Gunn Halvorsen and Marta Huglen Revheim, Royalteen: Princess Margrethe is a sequel to Royalteen. The debut movie starred Prince Kalle (Mathias Storhoi) and Lena (Ines Hoysæter Asserson) in the lead roles. Their love story was as scandalous as it comes with a monarch being involved with a teenage mom. Now, in this sequel, Kalle and Lena are sidestepped by Kalle’s twin sister, Margrethe (Elli Muller Osborne).

While Kalle is ferocious, unabashed and bold, Margrethe cares about her and her family’s image a lot. Just like her mother, Queen Sofia (Kirsti Stubo), Margrethe, too, suffers from major anxiety issues and panic attacks. The movie commences with a bang, the entire team of Margrethe has come together to celebrate the princess’ ex-arch-nemesis, Tess. Margrethe emphasizes holding the glass properly to Ingrid (Amalie Sporsheim), once again portraying her immaculate personality and obsession with precision.

But then, suddenly the royal princess faints and causes a ruckus. She wakes up in a hospital, surrounded by her parents. Queen Sofia expresses her deep disappointment and concern for her daughter while King Sverre (Frode Winther) stays mostly quiet. Weighed down by a secret, Margrethe keeps her mouth shut but her mind is bombarded with numerous questions and concerns. What if the royal princess’ secret is out?

Kalle and Margrethe run around the same circle, with most of the people around them sticking by just because of their status. One such man, Gustav Heger, has recorded Margrethe snorting out coke and being generally out of her mind. Now, he wants to use the video and the princess to his advantage. Meanwhile, Margrethe has a text from Prince Alexander of Denmark (German Wadi) and Lena is super excited to hear about it. Ingrid gets on the train as well and Margrethe’s hopes climb up.

Both these royal families decide to meet up in a cabin and enjoy a ski fest. Alexander and Margrethe enjoy each others’ company but the latter confuses Alexander’s warmth for something romantic. Now heartbroken over both Gustav and Alexander, Margrethe is still yearning for love. Though she has an admirer in the form of her DJ friend, Arnie (Filip Bargee Ramberg), Margrethe is torn between being the perplexed teenager she is.

Meanwhile, she resorts to alcohol more and more. Her parents, Queen Sofia and King Sverre, are stumped by issues of their own. Being driven by emotions, Margrethe gives Gustav a piece of her mind and feels lost once again. Gustav is left perplexed by the princess’ outburst.

Royalteen: Princess Margrethe Review

Not just another cliche melodrama, Royalteen: Princess Margrethe has much more to offer. Unlike the debut movie, this sequel stresses enough the importance of mental health and self-consciousness. The lead actress, Osborne, is commendable in her role. She portrays the self-conscious teenager with grace.

What I felt the movie lacked was its emphasis on Arnie and Margrethe’s relationship. The princess shared cosier moments with Alexander, not Arnie. Moreover, the secrets the monarchs were hiding didn’t get enough importance. Margrethe took the news too casually and Gustav didn’t appear as a profound antagonist. The friendship between Margrethe and Ingrid was gripping but her relationship with her future sister-in-law seemed lacking. Overall Royalteen: Princess Margrethe deserves 6.5 on 10.
