Is Caught Out Based On A True Story? Let’s Find Out!

The love for cricket runs in the veins of Indians. During the World Cup and IPL season, one can go without food and water. But switching off the television will surely bring the scenes of the 1989 wars into the house. Cricket is not a new sport for the Indians.

Although it was introduced in the British era, it has been accepted as something very indigenous and pious. People around the whole of India are so mad and crazy about cricket and exclusively the cricketers that they even worship them in their houses.

In contrast to the victories, the dark side of this sport is never revealed openly. Indian fans never accept the corruption and scandals happening in their house of worship.

Is Caught Out Based On A True Story?

Netflix dropped the bomb with the trailer of one such documentary which shows the dark secrets behind the glimmering and glittering world of Cricket. The latest documentary Caught Out: Crime, Corruption, Cricket premiered on the 17th of March 2023. It exposed the corrupt and scandalous happenings in the cricket world.

This unimaginatively titled movie repeats everything we know and the dark secrets that we don’t! It’s a sensible and intriguing, scandal-corrupt documentary that plays out like a sensationalist expose that’s less of a film and more of a quick informational flash. While it’s modelled to be a normal Sports segment, there’s already a best-of-the-best Hansie Cronje episode in the anthology. Filmmakers can also really use it as the only scandal to narrate these days since anything critical of the BCCI will be censored

Plot Of The Movie

The trailer starts with cricketers giving their views and comments on the sport. They say that cricket is something which shall never be included in the script, something which is scripted can never be a sport and this is how the story starts. Lines are thrown which state that match-fixing and scandals in the cricket ground are something which shall be debarred at any cost and kept out of the stadium.

The documentary is based on the infamous 2000 case between Sanjeev Chawla and South African cricketer Hansie Cronje who was a victim of a plane crash later in the year 2002. Delhi Police tapped the call between Chawla and the African player. They found out the conversation was a match-fixing deal between the two.

It was proved that Cronje charged money for losing a few of the international matches. Later, many cricketers gave witness against Cronjie. As soon as Chawla measured the intensity of hatred and defamation subjected to his fate, he ran to the UK.

Review of The Movie

There are multiple tiers to this title – one to go along with the obvious connotations it conveys about cricket, another to shed light on the players and the people caught up in this version of unsporting gambling, and the third focuses on the set of individuals who went undercover to break into the case and worried about being caught.

The documentary stood in a grey position and was hated and loved at the same time. Cricket fans in general and BBC could not handle this defamation and called the whole movie a publicity stunt to defame. For the others, it was an eye-opening movie. The immense faith in the game and piousness of the cricketers who were in some way or other given a higher position than the god himself were shattered into pieces.

The movie reveals the harsh reality hiding behind the faces of the protagonist. Sport, especially Cricket has always been kept at the epitome. The movie feels so real that one even though one is nowhere interested in Cricket can find it appealing. All you need to do is go to Netflix, search for the documentary, and watch it.

The unbothered tension that it brings with it will keep you invested for sure. Throughout the narrative, you will be captivated by how each anecdote is interwoven by the storytellers.
