Is High Water Based On A True Story?

Another intriguing historical drama series has surfaced online! This one reminds us about the “Millenium Flood”. Years have passed by, but the citizens of Poland still remember the disaster caused by the Oder River. It was indeed a worrisome moment for the whole world! On one hand, everyone was praying for the people stuck in Poland, while on the other hand, hundreds died out of fear and helplessness. This was one such natural disaster that could have been handled in a better way, but unfortunately, the warning signs and weather alert reports were ignored to a heavy extent. The recently launched Netflix drama, High Water has done complete justice to the whole story and we can’t wait to tell you more about it.

Is High Water Based On A True Story?

Yes, the news is accurate, the popular drama series which has recently surfaced on Netflix is not a fictional tale. The story depicted in High Water is very much true! The series plays around real events which took place in 1997. High Water takes us back to Wroclaw and yet again the audience gets a chance to see how hundreds lost their lives due to ignorance of critical weather estimates. Shockingly enough it was summer when this particular incident took place! A very unusual low-pressure weather caused severe rainfall across Central Europe. It was indeed raining like cats and dogs.

The direct effects of the disastrous rainfall were experienced mostly by Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Surprisingly, within just a few days and hours, the whole country came under the grip of the flood! The high water levels caused by the rainfall triggered the Oder River! Among other cities, Wroclaw suffered the most! Hundreds died and a bunch of damage was done to the historical monuments as well. Houses were ruined, many became homeless, and most importantly, even the official authorities struggled to help out the other people stuck in the flood!

High Water – Synopsis At A Glance!

Get ready to travel back in time! We are about to dive deep into Wroclaw! It was the late 90s when the flood took place! Our main protagonist of the show happens to be Jaśmina Tremer, the hydrologist who alerted everyone possible about the upcoming threat. But despite warning everyone, despite making them aware of the flood, she was barely taken seriously. This series also tries to throw light on the fact that women have always been marginalized by society!

On one hand, a deadly threat is approaching the city, while on the other hand, the Pope was planning to visit Wroclaw. Amid this, the group of experts was trying to study deeply about the low water pressure surrounding Central Europe. Moreover, we will also see how the local and higher authorities will fail the people of the city! If they would have acted at the right time, then this deadly threat could have been handled in a better way!

Was The Polish Government Held Faulty In  The 1997′ Millenium Flood?

Is High Water Based On A True Story?

Another interesting point that has been highlighted in the drama series happens to be this one. The Polish Government was indeed questioned for their measure policies! To save the people of the city from the damage, the government decides to shift people to the villages. Not realizing that this would have created major havoc in the village areas! In the Polish drama, we all saw how Tremer tries to voice up against this! In the series, the flood embankments were scheduled to develop in Kety while in reality, for this same purpose, the government targeted the villages of Janowice, Jeszkowice, and Łany!

Among the above three villages, only the people residing in Łany managed to save their village from the government. The village protest that we saw in the drama series actually happened for real. Again, the political angle which has been pinpointed in the Polish drama actually existed in Poland during the Millenium Flood crisis. On one hand, the innocent people of the city were trying to survive anyhow while on the other hand, the government and the higher authorities were trying to chalk out their respective motives.
