The series takes place in a fictional world where a mystical force called Fold has divided the kingdom of Ravka into two parts. The first season of “Shadow and Bone introduces us to the characters who must find a solution to end the pseudo-politics going on in the kingdom by dealing with dangerous challenges and the threat of war.
The first season begins with a young girl named Alina Starkov, who is a mapmaker. Alina is gifted, as she discovers that she has a rare gift that is very powerful and could help her save the country from destruction. Her power is called Sun Summoner. After Grisha, a group of magic-possessed soldiers learned about Alina’s mysterious powers, the leader of Grisha ordered his soldiers to bring her and train her.
Mal Oretsev is another interesting character in the series; he is Alina’s childhood friend. Inej approached Kaz Brekker, who is the leader of Crow Club, and Jesper Fahey, who is a sharpshooter, to carry out the mission. Meanwhile, training with the Grisha has transformed Alina into someone new, as she has become more powerful and has control over her majestic abilities.
But there are some twists in the series as Alina develops a romantic relationship with General Kirigan. The relationship did not last as Alina came to know about the general’s past and his plans regarding the kingdom.
Mal’s quest for finding Alina has ended as he finally finds her, and both of them attempt to run away from the kingdom together. But they get caught by the Druskelle and are taken to their leader, Fjerdan Queen’s guard Matthias Helvar. After being captured with Mal and Alina for some time, Matthias realizes that Alina is the key to destroying the Fold and decides to help her and Mal.
In the last episode of season 1, Alina and her friends attack the Fold using a powerful amplifier, but the plan doesn’t work out and all the efforts go in vain. In the episode, it is revealed that General Kirigan is the Shadow Summoner. He manipulates Alina’s power and attempts to take control of the kingdom.
In the final scene, we see that Alina and her friends succeeded in defeating Kirigan, but it was very late when they defeated the General as the Fold was already destroyed. This also cost Alina heavily, as all her powers were weakened. But the story doesn’t end here; after the fight, Alina and Mal decide to leave the kingdom, but in the end, it is revealed that General Kirigan is still alive and that he is on the run after stealing the dangerous amplifiers.
