Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 9 Recap And Ending Explained!

If you have been following the Vinland saga for a long time, we all know how far the story has come and from where it starts. The story of Thorfinn, son of Thors. The entire Viking setting that the makers have created over all these years has surely been received auspiciously by the fans and as we move on towards the second season of the show, for which the fans have been waiting for a long time and finally 2023 has brought it to us, the story doesn’t seem the same. Most of us have watched the first season and have fallen in love with the action dram and the different characters such as Askeladd, Thorfinn, Thorkell, and many others.

However most of them are dead or scattered in the second season and as we have seen in the previous episode, after the death of Askeladd, Thorfinn has got nowhere to go, he doesn’t remember much about his home, at the same time he has been occupied by some slave masters and sold off to a farm where he is now working on the fields as a slave. The entire transition of a boy who was just filled with hatred and trained to just kill people is slowly getting empty and has started living a life with no aim.

Episode 8 was a huge hit as we all know there was some fight coming on the way finally in the second season of the show, but will that fight be enough to put Thorfinn back to the warrior mode of killing people without an aim, or will it just be a start to his new life where he will be born as a new people is shown in the 9th episode of the show. As of now, the 9th episode has been taken very nicely by the fans and people, however, based on how complex the story has been going, some parts may be a bit confusing to understand as Thorfinn is a very complex character right now and many things are going on in his life.

Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 9 Recap And Ending Explained!

The ninth episode of the show sees a very complex start. We get to see a grown-up Thorfinn who is laying on a field where he assumes that whatever he has done in his life up to now is actually a lie or a dream as we may call it and he is filled with relief and the burden he has been carrying around in his heart for a  long time.

However, we move back to reality where Thorfinn lies on the ground when he was hit by a shovel because of the fight that broke out between the retainers and Einer. Einar is still fighting the retainers however he is so determined in beating them up that the retainers have to leave and they warn him that being a slave and attacking a free man was not the right thing and a heavy punishment awaits him. Then both of them pass out on the field. Soon we move to the continuation of the dream of Thorfinn where soon he spots his father Thor, whom we have actually not seen for a long time.

Thorfinn approaches Thor, however, he instantly asked Thorfinn about the blood that was all over him and whom he killed, we soon see the combination of another dream which we already saw in episode 8 where Thorfinn actually approached to kill an innocent family and this Thorfinn has actually killed the little boy.

Thors immediately starts telling him that the sword or the knives which were actually his weapon, was actually for protecting himself and not killing other and that he has failed his father. Soon the ground below him ends up crumbling and Thorffin falls down into a cliff where he holds onto the side and looks down to find a world where everyone is killing each other and seems dead.

We spot Bjorn in the scene who was actually the right-hand man of Askeladd as we have seen in the first season of the show, and at the same time, Thorfinn also spots Askjelass sitting above on the top of a small mountain-like structure and looking down on people.

We see a brief conversation between them where Askeladd tells him that this is the real state of the world of warriors where everyone is everyone’s enemy and Thorfinn was actually able to escape it when his inner warrior of him drained out. Though a mountain of dead bodies rises up to him and starts pulling Thorfinn down and cursing him, trying to pull him back into the world of warriors but at the same time Askeladd immediately snaps him out and asks him to escape the world and never fall again so he climbs up and wakes up from the dream.

He immediately helps Einar and while they walk home, they Throfinn decides to be reborn and start a new life where he will never hurt anyone again.

We move forward to the scene where Patir ends up finding one of the retainer’s coat buttons on the destroyed field of Einar and Thorfinn and when the master addresses them, he settles things by overlooking the fight as well as the retainers deed so that no chaos breaks up.

Towards the end of the show, we see that Thorfinn actually gives his best to rise above the world of warriors where there is no end and no escape until and unless the warrior inside him completely dies, and Thorfinn being so burdened because of the life, he has taken all his life, finally decides that he needs to escape that and at the same time regret for hitting one of the retainers which may be one of the main reason that he has been brought back to this world of warriors.

Along with that, we see the rebirth of Thorfinn as a new soul where he finally understands how to give up on the burden that he has been carrying around so that he can finally empty himself completely and go on living a life that is far away from the hatred.

Soon the master’s good nature can also be seen towards the end of the show, as he didn’t want to create a mess, nor did he want to treat the slaves badly that’s why he ended up looking over the huge punishment that Einar and Thorfinn may have got by putting forward the fact that it’s in his knowledge that the retainers were the one to actually the hard work of Einar and Thorfinn.
