In The Name Of God Season 1 Recap
The series entails the story of four Korean leaders who tricked and manipulated their followers for personal gain. This documentary will examine the tactics used by such leaders and the impact they have had on the people they have deceived.
In the late 1990s, South Korean police investigated the Baby Garden religious cult and its leader, Kim Ki-Soon, on charges of extortion, physical assault, and murder. Former members reported sexual exploitation, starvation, and minor beatings. During Kim’s detention, more horrifying accounts were revealed.
In August 1987, 32 members of the religious group and trading company Five Oceans were discovered dead inside the ceiling of a cafeteria in a building under construction in South Korea. The incident was initially thought to be a religious fanaticism-fueled mass suicide, but suspicions arose due to the group’s involvement in wiping out nearly ten million dollars.
The first occurrence is associated with a church, JMS Church. JMS was a new Christian religious movement led by Myeong-Seok in the 1980s. It was extremely popular among teenagers and college students. However, the JMS group’s lid was blown off in 2008 when Myeong-seok was sentenced to prison for raping three female followers. There are also numerous ongoing sexual misconduct allegations against him that continue to haunt him. JMS is a cautionary tale about the perils of blind faith and conmen leaders.
Lee Jae-Manmin Rock’s Central Church rose to prominence for its ability to heal the most difficult illnesses through faith and religion. However, allegations of fraudulent and illegal activities persisted, and followers violently attempted to stop a broadcast exposing their leader in 1999. The subsequent revelations about Lee Jae-rock and the church put an end to the followers’ blind faith.
To conclude, Netflix’s documentary, In The Name Of God, is based on the above four cases and explores the dark side of leadership, where individuals in positions of power use their tricks to manipulate people who follow them.
