Atal Bihari Vajpayee (25 December 1924 – 16 August 2018) is an Indian politician and diplomat, first 13 days in 1996 and then 13 months as Prime Minister of India. He continued his full term from 1998 to 1999 and then from 1999 to 2004. Vajpayee was one of the co-founders and senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was a member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a voluntary organization of Hindu nationalism. He was the first Prime Minister of India who was not a member of the full-term Indian National Congress. He was also a famous poet and writer. He has been a member of the Parliament of India for over 50 years and was elected 10 times to Lok Sabha in the House of Representatives and twice to Rajya Sabha in the Senate. He served as a member of Lucknow and retired from active politics in 2009 due to his poor health. He was one of the founding members of Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), and served as president from 1968 to 1972. BJS merged with several other political parties to form the Janata Party and won the 1977 general election. In March 1977, Vajpayee became Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Morarji Desai. He resigned in 1979 and the Janata Alliance soon collapsed. Former members of the BJS formed BJP in 1980 with Vajpayee as the first president.
