His mother, Rosalyn, worked as a hospital administrator, while his father, Benjamin, was an executive in the grocery sector. Saget temporarily studied at Lake Taylor High School after his family relocated to Norfolk, Virginia, when he was a small boy. Saget would subsequently attribute the start of his developing sense of humor to a disobedient student at Norfolk’s Temple Israel, a Conservative congregation.

Because he had no family in Virginia when he was 13, Saget had his bar mitzvah in Philadelphia. Saget met Larry Fine of The Three Stooges and heard a range of stories from him after his family moved from Virginia to the Encino district of Los Angeles.  The family will relocate back to Philadelphia prior to his final year. Saget received his diploma from Abington Senior High. Saget originally intended to become a doctor, but Elaine Zimmerman, his Honors English instructor, saw his artistic potential and pushed him to pursue a career in filmmaking.

Saget attended Temple University’s film program, where he made the black-and-white movie Through Adam’s Eyes, which earned him a nomination for a Student Academy Award and was about a boy who underwent reconstructive facial surgery. While still a student at Temple, Saget would ride the train to New York City to perform “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” while using a water bottle to simulate the guitar’s weeping.

Saget wed Sherri Kramer in 1982. They have three daughters as children. The pair were divorced in 1997. In 2018, Saget wed Eat Travel Rock TV personality, Kelly Rizzo. Saget was on the board of directors for the Scleroderma Research Foundation. From his scleroderma efforts, celebrities like Regina Hall from the Scary Movie benefited.

Saget shared with Ability Magazine the story of his sister, who passed away at the age of 47 after being diagnosed with scleroderma at the age of 43. She had already received multiple incorrect diagnoses. Saget wed Sherri Kramer. On January 9, 2022, Saget was a guest at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, close to Williamsburg, Florida. He had just concluded a stand-up tour stop at Ponte Vedra Beach the previous evening.

At approximately four o’clock Eastern Standard Time, hotel staff members discovered Saget dead in his room (EST). Family members became concerned after he missed his scheduled checkout time and they were unable to reach him. Emergency personnel declared him deceased at the scene. His age at the time was 65. There was no early indication of a cause of death, but the sheriff and the pathologist ruled out foul play and drug use.
