Weathering With You

weathering with you

A 2019 Japanese anime romance fantasy movie titled Weathering with You was made by CoMix Wave Films and distributed by Toho. It tells the story of a school student who flees his rural upbringing for Tokyo and encounters an orphan girl who can manipulate the weather.

Makoto Shinkai, the film’s writer and director, received a commission in 2018. The symphonic score and soundtrack were written by Radwimps, who had previously worked alongside Shinkai on Your Name. It featured the vocals of Kotaro Daigo & Nana Mori. The animation was directed by Atsushi Tamura (2016). The same-titled golden book, similarly authored by Shinkai, was released the day before the movie’s debut, and a manga adaptation was serialized on July 25, 2019, in the afternoon.

On July 19, 2019, Weathering with You received its theatrical premiere in Japan in regular, IMAX, and 4DX cinemas. On January 20, 2020, the film received its American release. Positive reviews were given to it, complimenting the animation, story, soundtrack, aesthetics, and emotional impact. However, some critics disagreed about whether it was comparable to Your Name. Unadjusted for inflation, the movie earned 21.11 billion ($193.65 million) globally, making it the highest-grossing Japanese film of 2019 and the sixth-highest-grossing anime movie of all time.

Numerous prizes were given to the movie, including being chosen as Japan’s Best International Feature Film submission at the 92nd Academy Awards. It shared the record for the most nominations for an anime movie at the Annie Awards with Spirited Away & Millennium Actress (both 2001) until Hosoda’s Belle (2021), with five nominations, overtook it. It got four Annie Award nominations, including one for Best Independent Animated Feature.

Even though Princess Mononoke is situated in late Muromachi, Japan, it has fantasy elements. The plot centres on Ashitaka, a young Emishi prince, and his participation in a conflict between the forest’s gods and those who exploit it for their gain. The Japanese term for supernatural, contour beings possessing people and bringing suffering, disease, and other adverse effects is Mononoke.

Tokyo Godfathers

Shows Like Uncle From Another World

Satoshi Kon is the author and director of the 2003 Japanese animated adventure film Tokyo Godfathers. This is Kon’s third movie to direct and his second that he authored and directed. Unlike the first two, the leading voice actors in Tokyo Godfathers are live-action performers such as Toru Emori, Yoshiaki Umegaki, and Aya Okamoto.

The 1948 American film 3 Godfathers inspired Kon to create the movie. Strangely for a Satoshi Kon film, Tokyo Godfathers is more grounded in realism and without any fantasy elements or themes of the limits between fiction and reality. Nevertheless, as is characteristic of Kon’s work, the movie uses complicated methods, and Kon himself described it as a twisted sentimental drama.

On November 8, 2003, Tokyo Godfathers was launched in Japan; on January 16, 2004, it was released in North America. It earned the 2003 Japan Digital Arts Festival’s Excellence Award and the 58th Mainichi Film Awards’ Best Animation Film.

Where to watch Tokyo Godfathers: You can watch it on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Crunchyroll.

Paprika

paprika

A 2006 Japanese anime science fantasy psychological thriller film, Paprika, was created by Satoshi Kon. The movie is based on Yasutaka Tsutsui’s 1993 novel of the same name. It was Kon’s fourth and last full-length movie before his passing in 2010. The character design and animated film director was Masashi Ando (recognized for Princess Mononoke, Dragged Away, Your Name), the music was composed by Kon’s longtime collaborator Susumu Hirasawa, and the art director was Nobutaka Ike. The latter has started working on all of Kon’s works. Kon co-wrote the script with Seishi Minakami, who also authored Kon’s T.V. series Paranoia Agent. The movie was developed and animated by the Japanese animation studio Madhouse.

The plot centers on a conflict between a dream terrorist who takes a feature that allows people to share their thoughts and gives them nightmares and a researcher psychologist who visits the dream realm and transforms into Paprika, a dream investigator, to look into the cases.

On November 25, 2006, the movie was released in Japan. On May 24, 2007, it was released in North America. Additionally, it was part of the 63rd Venice International Film Festival’s competition. Positive responses from the critics.

Streamline Pictures created an English-language dub in 1989 specifically for Japan Airlines’ transpacific flights. Troma Films distributed the movie’s dub co-produced by Jerry Beck under their 50th St. Movies label. Fox Video released this dub in American theatres in 1993, on VHS & LaserDisc in 1994, and on DVD in 2002.
