25 Best Digimon Series That You Should Know!

Digimon is a Japanese animated television series created by Akiyoshi Hongo in 1997 and first aired in Japan in 1999. This includes primarily a video or card game and virtual pets and adorable toys. There are 54 episodes in the original movie series. The majority of Digimon stories begin with a human child accidentally encountering a Digimon, entering the Digital World, or experiencing a Digimon who has entered the human world. Because the series is centred on virtual pets, the characters frequently appear as virtual pets. So we’ve compiled a list of the top 25 Digimon series for you.

Digimon Adventure Film (1999)

25 Best Digimon Series

Toei Animation released a 20-minute short anime film the day before the anime was aired, depicting DigiDestined’s first contact with Digimon. The film takes place four years after the anime’s debut episode and follows the story of a wild Parrotmon who arrived in the Real World and battled Tai’s and Kari’s Agumon (who Digivolved into Greymon). This conflict was witnessed by the remainder of the DigiDestined, as well as the DigiDestined from 02, and this was used to illustrate why they were selected to save the Digital World. This is the first event in the Adventure timeline, and you should see it before watching the anime.

Digimon Adventure (1999 – 2000)

25 Best Digimon Series

Taichi “Tai” Yagami, Sora Takenouchi, Yamato “Matt” Ishida, Takeru “T.K.” Takaishi, Koushiro “Izzy” Izumi, Mimi Tachikawa, and Joe Kido are the 7 characters of the DigiDestined series. They are eventually accompanied by Tai’s sister, Hikari “Kari” Yagami. Snow falls from the sky, accompanied by odd little things, as they spend the time at their summer camp.

After each child receives their object, they are unexpectedly dragged into a dimensional vortex and sent to a realm made entirely of digital data, known as the “Digital World,” which exists alongside the “actual world.” Shortly after landing, the kids meet their Digimons, who are dedicated to safeguarding them and combating various powerful adversaries who threaten the Digital World.

Digimon Adventure: Our War Game! (2000)

25 Best Digimon Series

The selected children, for their part, must understand for themselves why they were selected and how to become stronger by “listening to their hearts”; to do so, they must locate a sign that matches their personality while also teaching their Digimon to change the appearance and briefly become stronger. Various topics, such as mortality, self-sacrifice, and family troubles, are handled throughout the episodes.

Digimon Adventure 02 (I) (2000)

25 Best Digimon Series

The sequel to the franchise’s first film was still short (40 minutes), but it was longer than the first. Our War Game! takes place after the events of episode 54 and revolves around a damaged Digimon that is consuming data from the Internet. As the DigiDestined reunite with their companion Digimon for the first time to battle it, the Digimon grows and gets stronger. When their foe evolves into its final form, Diaboromon, the battle becomes one for both the Internet and the real world. This film takes place between Adventure and 02 and is mentioned in the anime’s second season, as well as serving as a setup for one of 02’s characters.

Digimon Adventure 02: Part 1: Digimon Hurricane Touchdown!! / Part 2: Supreme Evolution!! The Golden Digimentals (2000)

25 Best Digimon Series

The third Digimon film picks up after the DigiDestined defeat the Digimon Emperor in episode 21, unaware that a bigger threat lurks in the Digital World. They decide to take a well-earned rest. T.K. and Kari decide to pay a visit to Mimi in New York, but when a wild Wendigomon kidnaps her, they become entangled in Willis’ story and must aid the American DigiDestined in saving not only his second Digimon but also their friends. This film is set between episodes 21 and 22 and is, in some ways, filler stuff; nonetheless, because it was released separately, it is well worth watching because it expands the story and clarifies some later-in-the-anime events.

Digimon Adventure 02: Revenge of Diaboromon (2001)

25 Best Digimon Series

The fifth film was a short, episode-length work (29 minutes) set after the finish of the second anime but before the epilogue scene at the end. Three months after defeating MaloMyotismon, the DigiDestined discover that Diaboromon is still alive inside the Internet and must be defeated. This time, however, they must battle his Digivolved form, Armageddemon.

Until Omnimon contributes his energy to Imperialdramon so that he can Digivolve into Imperialdramon Paladin Mode, Armageddemon proves to be more strong than Omnimon and Imperialdramon. He can overcome Armageddemon and once again save the Internet.

Digimon Adventure tri. (2015 – 2018)

25 Best Digimon Series

tri. was first declared as a new anime series, but Toei Animation later revealed that it will be released as six theme anime films, telling a fresh story about the original DigiDestined, who are now 3 years older than when 02 ended. Although it did reference the DigiDestined from 02, Digimon Adventure tri. centred on the original group of youngsters as they fight a new menace that threatens to ruin both worlds.

A mystery anomaly is producing distortions in the Real World, and Digimon has been infected with a virus that has turned them hostile. As a result of these events, the DigiDestined are reunited with their Digimon partner. They must uncover the mystery of the infected Digimon and deal with the responsibility of growing up with the help of another DigiDestined named Meiko Mochizuki and her partner Meicoomon, without realizing that Meicoomon is the key to solving the situation.

Digimon Adventure 20th Memorial Story (2019 – 2020)

25 Best Digimon Series

This five-episode OVA series was originally planned as a crowdfunding effort, with five short prequel stories to Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution – Kizuna. So far, three OVAs have been released, with just the first receiving official subtitles. They’re brief stories about certain characters and events in their lives that take us to where they are right before Kizuna begins.

Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution – Kizuna (2020)

25 Best Digimon Series

Kizuna was a feature-length anime film that provided a sentimental farewell to the series that captivated generations. It was announced as the final episode in the narrative of the original DigiDestined. Kizuna was a painful, yet fitting finale to a 20-year-long saga, with enhanced animation, a revamped soundtrack, and a strong, emotive story. The DigiDestined had to reunite with their partners to defeat the mysterious Eosmon, a Digimon who appeared to be kidnapping the souls of DigiDestined all across the world, only to find out that their time with their partner Digimon was coming to an end due to their maturation.

Digimon Adventure: (2020 – 2021)

25 Best Digimon Series

Technology is ubiquitous in the year 2020. Every digital gadget on the planet is linked by a single network via which data travels. Taichi Yagami, a fifth-grader, is getting ready for summer camp when unusual events occur in Tokyo; certain technological systems have gone wild. He hurries to the neighbouring station when he learns that his sister and mother are stranded aboard an unstoppable train. Taichi is suddenly taken to another realm, where he encounters a weird monster named Agumon, who seems to recognize him. Taichi also receives a weird device known as a “Digivice,” which allows him to communicate with the world outside of the digital age.

Digimon Tamers (I) (2001)

25 Best Digimon Series

Takato discovers that he has evolved into a “Digimon Tamer” and creates his own Digimon companion, Guilmon, from a photograph. Takato finds two other children, Henry Wong and Rika Nonaka, who turn out to be tamers as well. He quickly connects with Henry, but it takes the two youngsters some time to get to know and work with Rika, who sees the Digimon as “war machines.” As this gang formed, Digimon invaded Tokyo, Japan, particularly the Shinjuku neighbourhood, via multiple digital portals. The Tamers combat them to protect their city, but they’re not alone: a government group called Hypnos, directed by Yamaki, is attempting to exterminate the Digimon to put an end to the invasions. Calumon, a strange Digimon with the only power to manipulate Digivolutions, is also introduced to the group.

Digimon Tamers: Battle of Adventurers (2001)

25 Best Digimon Series

The first Tamers film, The Battle of the Adventurers, is set between episodes 23 and 24 of the original anime. It follows the Tamers during their summer vacation, who are now referred to as DigiDestined for the first time. Takato travels to Okinawa to see his cousin Kai, Henry explores an undersea meteor, and Rika remains in the city. Using the computer virus “V-Pet,” an evil Digimon named Mephistomon disables international connections and lets Digimon enter the real world (yes, yes, like the original Digimon game).

Takehito Uehara, Minami’s father, is discovered to be the creator. The Tamers assist Seasarmon, Minami’s companion, in defeating Mephistomon and his Digivolved form, Gulfmon, and restoring the world. The movie isn’t mentioned in the anime, so it doesn’t play a significant role in the plot, but it’s still worth watching now, in between the two episodes.

Digimon Tamers (II) (2001 – 2002)

Toei Animation and Akiyoshi Hongo went on to another concept once the Adventure arc ended, resulting in Digimon Tamers. The core concept remained the same, but the tone, storytelling, and character development were all different from Adventure. Tamers followed a group of children as they battled the D-Reaper, a digital monster that threatened to destroy both the Digital and Real Worlds, while also uncovering key facts about the Digital World’s history, with the help of their Digimon. Before the protagonists found they were real, Adventure was simply a TV show, exactly as in our world, and Digimon was only a trading card game. The season also includes two films, one set during the main plot and one set after the story has concluded.

Digimon Tamers: Runaway Locomon (2002)

The second Tamers film generated controversy since the anime’s creator was not consulted during production, which accounts for various continuity mistakes in the film, despite the tone remaining consistent. Runaway Locomon was created to confirm that the Tamers were reunited with their Digimon partners after the series ended, months after the DigiDestined parted ways with them.

The plot centres around a chaotic Locmon that appear in the Real World but are actually under Parasimon’s control. To confront the new menace, the Tamers and their allies must pool their resources. The film is only 30 minutes long and serves as the final chapter in the Tamers series.

Digimon Frontier (I) (2002)

A group of 10 Digimon sacrificed their life to combat the forces of evil that threatened the Digital World a long time ago. Before leaving the Digital World in the hands of three celestial Digimon, these fighters built objects from their data, the twelve “Spirits.” However, to rule supreme, one of these three Digimon, Cherubimon, chose to cage these comrades.

To help, another celestial Digimon, Ophanimon, used the Trailmon to call five chosen young children from the physical world (Digimon with the appearance of hybrid trains). These five selected ones travel to the Digital World and encounter two spirits (Human and Beast) who turn into Digimon Warriors.

Digimon Frontier: Island of Lost Digimon (2002)

It was quite difficult to place this film within the Frontier series’ narrative due to its timetable. The scenario was unclear, and there were no references to the film in the anime series, but we believe it is ideal if you saw this 40-minute film between episodes 37 and 38, since it best fits the overall narrative framework. The DigiDestined are traveling through the desert when they come across the Lost Island, a floating landmass where a civil war between human-type and beast-type Digimon is waging.

The DigiDestined must resolve the battle and track down a secret evildoer while also reawakening AncientGreymon and AncientGarurumon, two of the Ancient Warriors who provide the DigiDestined with their abilities. The story is worth watching since it delves deeper into the history and legacy of the underappreciated Frontier franchise.

Digimon Frontier (II) (2002 – 2003)

25 Best Digimon Series

Rather than continuing Tamers, Hongo and Toei decided to modify the concept and produce a brand-new anime called Digimon Frontier. This anime further altered the franchise’s premise, history, and narrative by adding – for the first time – true human Digivolution, in which the characters used Spirits to transform into Digimon. The DigiDestined had to use the Ten Ancient Warriors’ abilities to overcome a rampaging Cherubimon and then Lucemon, the Ancient Warriors’ first foe. This season was conceptually distinct from the others and, in many ways, unique. A bonus film was also released, set during the main story and investigating the history of this iteration of the Digital World.

Digimon Data Squad, or Digimon Savers (2006 – 2007)

Masaru Daimon, a street combatant is only 14 years older, meets Agumon, a peculiar dinosaur-like creature known as a Digimon that has recently escaped the custody of the DATS (Digital Accident Tactics Squad), a secret government organization assigned to safeguard the real world from dangers from the Digital World. If they locate one, they join the DATS; if they don’t, these lone Digimon are returned to the Digital World in the shape of a Digi-egg by the organization. The Digisoul is related to the human’s emotions and manifests as a shimmering aura around the user’s palm, which is then channelled through the Digivice with the order “Digisoul, recharge!” to upgrade to Champion level. The “full charge,” which appears all over your body, allows you to go to the Ultimate level, while the “overcharge” allows you to advance to the Mega form and then to the Burst mode. Thus begins a series of adventures for the members of the DATS aimed at defending both the real world and the realm of these creatures.

Digimon Savers: Ultimate Power! Burst Mode Activated!! (2007)

This episode-length (21-minute) film sparked a lot of canon and continuity debates at first. The story centres around Agumon, Gaomon, and Lalamon, whose mates, along with the rest of the humans, are forced to an endless sleep by a mysterious thorn that has spread over the city.

They learn from Rhythm, a Digimon in the form of a young girl, that the thorns are the work of an evil Digimon named Argomon, and the four go out to meet him in his castle. The film does not appear to be tied to any aspect of the Data Squad anime and feels entirely unique; also, the spoofers at the end of the film suggest that it was a real film with actors, stuntmen, and everything else.

This is why some fans do not consider it canon. We wouldn’t go quite that far, but there is a clear problem with the film’s continuity, as it doesn’t appear to fit anyplace. This is why we recommend seeing it after you’ve finished watching the anime.

Digimon Savers 3D: The Digital World in Imminent Danger! (2009)

From July 8, 2006, to July 2, 2008, this film was shown at Sanrio Puroland’s Time Machine of Dreams theme park attraction and Harmonyland. It was released in theatres on October 3, 2009, as part of the Burst Out! 3D Toei Anime Festival, with Digimon Adventure 3D: Digimon Grandprix! (another out-of-continuity feature), GeGeGe no Kitaro: Kitaro’s Ghost Train, and Yaemon, The Locomotive. It was later made available on home video. The film follows a short journey of the Digimon from the Data Squad anime, and it has no direct link to the main timeline, so you can watch it after you’ve completed the rest of the series.

Digimon Xros Wars (2010 – 2011)

25 Best Digimon Series

The Fusion Fighters meet and befriend several Digimon along the way, such as Cutemon, Dorulumon, and Chibitortomon, who will join them in their quest and stand up to Bagra’s army’s servants, particularly the three leaders – Tactimon, Lilithmon, and Blastmon. The Fusion Fighters and Team Blue Flame manage to collect all of the remaining Code Crown fragments, but Lord Bagramon manages to take them and send Mikey, Angie, Jeremy, and a weakened Shoutmon to Earth.

The Evil Death Generals and the Seven Kingdom (2011)

Lord Bagramon now has ultimate control over the Digital World, which he divided into seven kingdoms led by seven generals: Dorbicmon, NeoMyotismon, Zamielmon, Splashmon, Olegmon, Gravimon, and Apollomon. Mikey sets out on a trip with Christopher and Nene to liberate these seven territories.

They also strive to figure out what happened to Ewan Amano, Nene’s brother who is missing in cyberspace. When they get to General Apollomon’s Last Realm, he confesses that, despite being one of the Seven Dark Generals, he is a decent Digimon who is attempting to aid his people by claiming to assist Lord Bagra. The true general turns out to be none other than Apollomon’s dark side.

They also learn that Bagramon is attempting to get Ewan to get in their way. Shoutmon defeats Lord Bagramon with a lifelong ambition to establish peace to both realms after Mikey saves Ewan and finds all of the Code-Crown fragments.

The Hunters Who Leapt Through Time (2011 – 2012)

However, the problems are far from ended, as monsters from an intermediate universe — the DigiQuartz — are now causing havoc, cursed by various real-world human emotions. They stand up to the wayward Digimon as a team with Mikey Kudo and Ewan Amano, as well as their allies Shoutmon—who later became the Digital World’s King—and Damemon. After proving themselves, the old man reveals that the true task of this quest is to find the best candidate to battle alongside legendary heroes – the protagonists of the previous five seasons – against Quartzmon, the ultimate vestige of Lord Bagramon’s data and a threat to the entire cosmos. Everything returns to normal in the real world a month later; the elderly man reappears in front of the children and assumes the voice of Lord Bagramon to confess to them that he tried to safeguard this world and is now searching for his brother. Mikey, Ewan, Tagiru, and their companions conclude the series by searching for new monsters lost in the real world.

Digimon Universe: App Monsters (2016 – 2017)

In the United States Appli Monsters also known as App Monsters, it is a spin-off of the original series that ran from 2016 to 2017. The show took place within the main narrative universe, although it was unlike any of the other shows. Digimon does not exist in the way they did previously, but rather as Applimon, digital monsters that inhabit various mobile applications, each with a power unique to the app it symbolizes. Haru Shinkai, the protagonist of the anime, must utilize his Appmon to destroy the artificial intelligence Leviathan with the help of his companions.

Digimon Ghost Game (2021 – present)

He’s also curious, which leads him to be intrigued by a mysterious gadget he inherited from his father called a “Digivice,” which allows him to glimpse undiscovered creatures that ordinary mortals cannot see, the Digimon. Hiro has been routinely challenged with weird phenomena since his contact with Gammamon, a mischievous Digimon entrusted to him by his father: confronting a man with a stitched mouth taking human life expectancy or even a mummy who wanders every night to sequester people, etc.
