Is My Brilliant Friend Season 4 Release Date Announced?

My Brilliant Friend is an Italian coming-of-age drama based on the literary work of Elena Ferrante and is also titled after the first four novels of the same Neapolitan novel series. Saverio Costanza created the television series for HBO, RAI, and TIMvision. Before the premiere of season1, the first two episodes were presented at the 75th Venice International Film Festival back in 2018. The first season then officially premiered on November 18th of the same year on HBO. Followed by RAI and TIMvision on November 27, 2018. Subsequently, a second season was confirmed in December 2018 and released much later on HBO on March 16, 2020.

My Brilliant Friend was renewed for a third season on April 30, 2020, and premiered on RAI on February 6, 2020, and HBO on February 28, 2022.

The first season kicks offset in Naples in the 1950s and tells the story of best friends Elena and Lila, two girls at the top of their class in school. Both are brilliant, yet show it in two different ways. The story follows how they cope with life, relationships, careers, and judgemental patriarchal society.

My Brilliant Friend Season 4 Release Date

The show was created with the intention of covering the whole novel series in four 8-episode seasons. Though no official release date or announcement was made, it is very likely to be renewed for season 4. Not to mention season 3 was released only recently so it may take some time to receive any updates from the producers. Even if an announcement for renewal is made, it may take a while for the official premiere (if previous season timelines are a recurring pattern).

My Brilliant Friend Season 4 Story

The title of the fourth novel of the Elena Ferrente quadrilogy is “The story of the Lost Child”. This will be the basis for the fourth season. Not much is known as to the exact story of season 4 seeing as it is in the pre-production stage, but there is a high possibility for a change of cast due to the final episode of season 3, wherein a cliffhanger scene, the actress that plays Elena looks into a mirror and her face changes to that of Alba Rohrwacher. Alba is an A-list Italian actress that actually has been doing voiceovers for this particular show since season 1.

Season 4 might go into how the girls navigate their current lives, both personal and professional, in a landscape that is changing politically and socially. Though they seem to be confident with their decisions, both Elena and Lila find themselves longing for the familiar: their home, their friendships, and most importantly, each other.

My Brilliant Friend Season 3 Recap

Season 3 takes place in the 1970s and finds Lila living with Enzo Scanno in the tenements on the outskirts of Naples. She is not on speaking terms with her father and husband. She has started working at a local sausage factory, under tough conditions, in order to provide for her son, Rino.

Elena is back in the neighborhood in preparation for her marriage to professor Pietro Airota, following which she will make a move to Florence. The neighborhood itself has been developed and the families have done well for themselves since simple beginnings in season 1, indicated by the large number of automobiles traveling in and out of the place. This season also explores the relationship between Elena and her mother, who is not too fond of Elena’s novel, due to whispers among critics and also the topics she chooses to address in it. Though, the mother herself has not read it.

Season 3 also shows both the girls’ first steps into activism, with Lila becoming affiliated with the communist revolution in Naples and Elena joining the feminist movement. Though, the story does not go too much into this part of their lives.

Lila ends up quitting her job in protest, which has its own sequence of events that follow, whereas Elena’s participation in the feminist movement gives her the inspiration for her next novel.

The moments can get very intense, emotional, and intimate as the story follows the two leads, who reject norms, display their cleverness, and say yes to new opportunities, all while battling self-doubt, jealousy, and other conflicting feelings towards the people around them.

My Brilliant Friend Season 4 Cast

My Brilliant Friend Season 4 Release Date

It is still very early to confirm anything but there is a decent chance that most of the cast remains unchanged. There are some possibilities for change in the lead roles though because the previous actresses have to portray women much older than they actually are. We know almost certainly that Elena will now be played by Alba Rohrwacher. Any additional change is not yet announced.
