The ‘Despicable Me’ franchise took off and was beloved by all when it came out with its first movie back in 2010. It had a unique perspective on cartoon villains, a different display of humor, and most importantly the iconic characters called minions. These feisty little yellow creatures are workers for a so-called villain- Felonious Gru.
With the minions having a fanbase all over the world for themselves, custom merch demand, and general appeal to audiences of all ages, the makers decided to add a prequel exclusively about the minions and their personal stories. This movie was released in 2015 and was well received by the audiences. The ‘Minions’ movie is the third overall movie of this franchise.
Minions 2 Release Date
The makers decided to continue with this story and announced a sequel to the first Minions movie (yet it is a prequel to the ‘Despicable me’ storyline) back in 2017 and were scheduled to be released in the summer of 2020. They went through delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic during which Illumination, the production company of the movie, had to close and so they pushed the release date. Now after much waiting, ‘Minions 2’ aka ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ is set to release in theatres across the US on July 1, 2022. This will be the fifth overall movie of the franchise.
Minions: The Rise of Gru is directed by Kyle Balda with co-directors Brad Ableson and Jonathan Del Val. Kyle Balda is also the director of ‘Despicable Me 3’ and ‘Minions’. It is written by Brian Lynch, who also worked on ‘Minions’, and Matthew Fogel.

Minions 2 Story
The movie will follow the story of a young Gru, a boy in the ‘70s suburbs who aspires to be a supervillain. The 12-year old, along with his newfound help, the minions, goes to meet The Vicious 6, a well-known group of villains in hopes of becoming a member. He has to steal a precious stone to prove himself, but things don’t go according to plan as the new minion member, Otto, loses the stone. Gru then sets his little helpers out on a search for the stone which agitates some powerful forces. Young Gru and his minions must then flee and outsmart an evil enemy and will stop at nothing to reach their goals.
The movie is predicted to be completely authentic to the 1790s in terms of the soundtracks and clothing of the animated characters. The total runtime is expected to be 90 minutes.
In the first ‘Minions’ movie, we followed the journey of Kevin, Stuart, and Bob who set out to travel the world in search of a new leader for their tribe after being fed up with their life in the frigid Antarctic. They set their eyes on a Villain-Con conference where they hope to find a nefarious new boss, and all this takes place in 1968.
Their journey takes them through New York City and Orlando where they meet a family of bank robbers along the way. The scenes are quite humorous and the minions themselves make it more lively with their incomprehensible linguistics and outbreak of songs.
They end up deciding to work for a supervillain appropriately named Scarlett Overkill, voiced by none other than Sandra Bullock. She recruits them as part of her plan to steal the crown jewels and become the Queen of England. The trio is assisted by their minion tribe who escaped from Antarctica while fleeing from angry Yetis, after accidentally knocking out the leader yeti. The attention to detail and accuracy in the settings and vibrant colors on screen really adds to the aesthetic of this film. The film comes to a close with some crazy stunts, exciting chases, Bob becoming the king of England, the Minions turning on Scarlett to save the day, and ends with the appearance of a familiar character. A younger version, at least.
Minions 2 Cast
‘Minions 2’ will see the return of Steve Carell as the voice of Gru. Some other well-known names like Taraji P. Henson, Russell Brand, Jean-Calude Van Damme, Julie Andrews, and Danny Trejo will also be voicing for other major roles.
