Thirteen items of art were taken from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston in the early morning hours of March 18, 1990. Two guys impersonating police officers responded to a disturbance report, and the criminals tied the guards up and plundered the museum for an hour. The case is still unresolved; no arrests have been made, and no artwork has been found. The loot is estimated at $500 million by the FBI, and the museum is offering a $10 million reward for information leading to the art’s recovery, the highest reward ever provided by a private organization.

The FBI believes the robbery was orchestrated by a criminal gang. The FBI has relied heavily on interrogations, undercover informants, and sting operations to gather information in this case due to a lack of significant physical evidence. They have mostly concentrated on the Boston Mafia, which was embroiled in an internal gang battle at the time.

One version is that gangster Bobby Donati orchestrated the robbery in order to secure the release of his caporegime from prison; Donati was assassinated a year after the robbery.
