When American Profile inquired about the identities of Sheldon and Leonard. Bill Prady stated that they were named after legendary performer and television producer Sheldon Leonard. Who created shows such as The Andy Griffith Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show, among many others.

Bill Prady’s inspiration for Sheldon Cooper turned out to be a computer geek, not a physicist. “Before I was was a writer, I was a computer programmer and was collaborating with guys who were extremely bright and had a little problem integrating into the world,” he clarified at Paley Fest ’09. “I used to inform Chuck [Lorre] about a person I know who was a mortal calculator. If you programmed in Z80 arrangement, you had to transform from numeric to hexadecimal so you could either scoop up the calc or you might yell it to this dude and he would do it faster.
