There is always one actor whose name is associated with a particular superhero character when it comes to superhero movies. You can not think of Robert Downey Jr. without thinking of Iron Man, Captain Marvel and Brie Larson cannot be separated in our minds while Thor is the one and only Chris Hemsworth. However, unlike other superheroes, the actor playing Spider-Man has changed many times.
Coming up soon is Tom Holland’s portrayal of the massively popular superhero. Spider-Man: No Way Home is the first in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe. And before it releases, here’s us at Live Akhbar looking at how many Spider-Man has been there to date.
How Many Spiderman Movies Are There?
A total of 8 Spider-Man movies have been released over the years. The period is a big one and so the different installments of the series have been released with ample time in between them.
The first Spider-Man wasn’t played by Holland. As fans would remember, the first Spider-Man was released in 2002 when the franchise was still owned by Sony. Those were times when the box office was majorly dominated by Blade and X-Men, and Tobey Maguire entered the scene as the man in the spidey suit.
The first Spider-Man with Tobey as its leading face was the biggest hit of the year resulted in the release of two more Tobey-led Spider-Man movies. Spider-Man 2 was released in 2004. 2 years after the first installment. It was followed by the release of Spider-Man 3 in 2007.
Despite the initial acceptance, Spider-Man 3 turned out to be a flop and was the last of the series featuring Toby.
Since then, the popularity of superhero movies has increased with studios becoming better equipped. At this stage, the earlier depiction of Spider-Man by Toby became a subject of mockery and Sony decided to produce the next instalment of the Spider-Man series. This time with Andrew Garfield as the face behind the mask. This movie was released 10 years after the first one in 2012.
Amidst all this, it was reported that two movies prior to the fourth installment had been thrown into the gutter at the ideation stage by the original director Sam Riami. This was also when Marc Webb got on board and gave his creative mind for two movies that were later scrapped and the franchise was about to come to an end when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was released in 2014.

The Dispute For Rights
Despite the initial acceptance, Spider-Man 3 turned out to be a flop and was the last of the series featuring Toby.

After all this, Sony partnered with Marvel in 2017 when Pete Parker also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Tom Holland as the lead in Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, fans were left dissatisfied due to the changes in the backstory of the protagonist’s life. Even as it added new layers to the stories took away from the initial essence.
In conclusion with the release of the latest Spider-Man movie, there will be a total of 9 Spider-Man movies spanning decades. This total is counting the debatable Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that was released in 2018.
The story revolved around Miles Morales and was released primarily because the rights are shared with Disney.
Technically the rights to the superhero are reserved with Sony but the dispute surrounding the rights has been going on for a long because of certain financial agreements. The issue was resolved in September 2019, thus giving way to the release of the newest film in the series.
