Based on Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories series of novels, the first season debuted on 10 October 2015 with eight episodes while its second season premiered on 16 March 2017 covering the same number of episodes as the first and primary one. Season 3 and Season 4 came out on 19 November 2018 and 26 April 2020 respectively. the first and second season was broadcasted on BBC Two whilst the next third and fourth season were distributed by Netflix.

The series has been met with a positive reaction. On Rotten Tomatoes, season one has an 87% endorsement based on reviews from 31 critics, with a score of 7.6/10. On IMDb, the series has a score of 8.4/10 based on 97,153 users voting. The second and the third series got 86% and 100% endorsement ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively.

Netflix already decided to renew the series for the fifth season as well but unfortunately, season 5 will be the last one of this franchise and the fans of The Last Kingdom will have to say a final goodbye to the cast of the series. as for the release date of season 5, we still don’t have it but seems like we don’t have to wait too long until we get the official release date as the production of the drama was started back in 2020 under the protocol of the Covid-19 pandemic. the production work is now close to wrap and most probably we can expect season 5 to premiere either in late 2021 or the beginning of 2022.
